Intel To Buy Infineon’s Wireless Ops for $1.4 bln

German chipmaker Infineon has agreed to sell its wireless unit to Intel for $1.4 billion, enabling the U.S.chipmaker to boost its pesence in the smartphone market. The cash transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, Infineon said in a statement on Monday. The wireless unit will remain as a standalone business, Intel said. “The acquisition of Infineon’s WLS business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy – Internet connectivity – and enables us to offer a portfolio of products,” Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini said.
Three people familiar with the matter had told Reuters on Friday that Intel and Infineon would likely reach an agreement on the future of Infineon’s wireless operations within the next few days. Infineon shares closed down 0.9 percent at 4.61 euros ($5.86) in Frankfurt on Friday, recouping some of the losses they posted after Intel warned that its third-quarter revenue would fall short of its own expectations due to weak consumer demand on personal computers. Intel shares closed largely flat at $18.37. The move comes just over a week after Intel announced its $7.7-billion offer for McAfee Inc,its largest acqusition.

This arrangement could allow the iMac to run on iOS instead of OS X. Razer Launches World’s First Mechanical Keyboard For Gaming

Razer today announced the Razer BlackWidow mechanical gaming keyboard. Most mechanical keyboards in the market today are standard mechanical keyboards rebadged as gaming keyboards that feature stiff keys that cause key actuation fatigue. Such keyboards are inherently worse off for gamers as it actually decreases gameplay performance as opposed to enhancing it. As a result, most professional gamers eschew such marketing gimmicks for regular membrane keyboards.
For the past 3 years, Razer’s design and engineering teams have been working on a mechanical keyboard – developed for gamers from the ground up, resulting in the Razer BlackWidow.
The Razer BlackWidow features a tactile mechanical key architecture that provides each key on the keyboard with a crisp response and tactile feedback similar to a mouse click. Coupled with a unique key actuation point halfway through the full travel distance, the optimized mechanical key structure found in each of the Razer BlackWidow’s keys provide for greater precision and accuracy versus other traditional mechanical keyboards.
The keys on the Razer BlackWidow also feature one of the lightest actuation forces for all keyboards. The key actuation force has been optimized by the Razer design team from readily available components but sorted with the rigorous quality standards that Razer is known for. As a result, this enhanced key force allows gamers to type and click much faster than other mechanical keyboards in the industry.
