Samsung launched a new ARM processor called Humming Bird, that uses the same design as the Cortex A8 which is in the iPhone 3GS. The upgrade to it is that this one clocks at 1GHz. The previous chip clocked at 883 MHz.
This is accomplished both by a smaller, more energy-efficient 45 nanometer process as well as partly customized circuits designed to handle the load.

Intel To Buy Infineon’s Wireless Ops for $1.4 bln

German chipmaker Infineon has agreed to sell its wireless unit to Intel for $1.4 billion, enabling the U.S.chipmaker to boost its pesence in the smartphone market. The cash transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, Infineon said in a statement on Monday. The wireless unit will remain as a standalone business, Intel said. “The acquisition of Infineon’s WLS business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy – Internet connectivity – and enables us to offer a portfolio of products,” Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini said.
Three people familiar with the matter had told Reuters on Friday that Intel and Infineon would likely reach an agreement on the future of Infineon’s wireless operations within the next few days. Infineon shares closed down 0.9 percent at 4.61 euros ($5.86) in Frankfurt on Friday, recouping some of the losses they posted after Intel warned that its third-quarter revenue would fall short of its own expectations due to weak consumer demand on personal computers. Intel shares closed largely flat at $18.37. The move comes just over a week after Intel announced its $7.7-billion offer for McAfee Inc,its largest acqusition.

HP Prepares Netbook With Dual Core Atom Chip

HP’s preparing to launch a series of netbooks with Dual Core Atom chips. Documents on HP’s site indicate that HP Mini 5103 will use that chip. The product notes say the device will use the Intel Atom dual-core N550 1.5GHz processor.
The Mini 5103 is 2.6 pounds, with a 10.1-inch screen, uses a metal-encased design, and offers extra features such as mobile broadband powered by Qualcomm’s Gobi technology.

iMac Could Go Multitouch

A patent in Europe shows that the iMac may go multitouch. It would still utilize a mouse and a keyboard but the screen would be a touch screen. This arrangement could allow the iMac to run on iOS instead of OS X. This would mean that games like Angry Birds could be played on a 20 inch screen as opposed to just the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad.
