Apple Likely to Show Off New iPods Sept 1
Aug 26th
Apple Inc is expected to show off a snazzier line of iPods on Sept. 1, as speculation mounts the consumer electronics giant may also unveil plans to reinvigorate its long-neglected TV project. Analysts expect the makers of the iPhone and the iPad, which has always labeled Apple TV a hobby, to showcase a new iPod Touch with dual cameras in time for the holidays. Its shares climbed 1.2 percent. The company has in recent years used splashy September events to showcase new iPod models for the year-end spending spree. It typically also describes tweaks and new features for its iTunes online media store.
Last year’s event marked the return of Steve Jobs to the public eye after a long hiatus, during which he underwent a liver transplant. This year, blogs are afire with talk about a souped-up Apple TV, though analysts deem unlikely a major announcement on that front next week. Sources have told Reuters Apple is in the throes of negotiations with the major U.S. TV networks from Walt Disney Co’s ABC to General Electric Co’s NBC, hoping to offer TV shows for rent via iTunes for 99 cents per episode. But those sources also said it was not a done deal. Apple and the media companies have declined to comment. “From our checks with supply chain and industry sources, we believe potential changes could turn Apple TV into a bigger hobby and a multimillion unit seller,” Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros wrote. Apple will hold the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where it introduced the iPad in April.
This year’s invitation carried a prominent picture of a guitar’s front, with an Apple logo standing in for the sound hole. The company’s iPods dominate the music- and media-player market, but growth there has moderated in past years and it has turned its attention toward the iPhone and iPad. In the June quarter, Apple said it sold 9.41 million iPods in the June quarter, down from 10.2 million a year earlier. In contrast, analysts estimate the company sells about 1 million Apple TV units annually. Still, some analysts expect Apple to eventually revamp — and enhance — its long-neglected TV device as the electronics maker continues to merge content with gadgets and ensconce itself in the home. Wu expects to revamped Apple TVs in stores as early as this holiday, or the first half of 2011. “In the grander scheme of things, it takes them a step closer” in that effort,” Wu said. The device is “perhaps a precursor into a bigger effort to address the home entertainment space down the road.”
Apple Says Will Replace Overheating iPods in Japan
Aug 14th
Apple Inc’s Japan unit will replace any iPod nano portable music players that overheat, it said in an online statement, improving an earlier offer to replace only their faulty batteries. The concession on Tuesday came after Japan’s trade ministry put the world’s largest technology company under scrutiny, ordering it to publish an “easy to understand” statement on its website explaining how users of the devices could receive replacement batteries and obtain advice. The first generation models, sold between September 2005 and December 2006, have been responsible for around 60 incidents of overheating in Japan, including four cases of minor burns, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Apple described the incidents as “very rare” and has blamed the problem on a single battery supplier, without identifying the maker. A spokesman for the U.S company in Tokyo on Wednesday declined to comment on the number of the devices sold in Japan or on the spat with the Japanese government. “We’ve worked closely with METI to make sure first-generation iPod nano customers who are concerned with their battery have the latest information,” U.S.-based spokesman Tom Neumayr had said on on Aug. 6. METI said it was “truly regrettable” that it took Apple until Sunday to report around 30 of the incidents of overheating.
FaceTime Camera Likely for Next iPod Touch
Aug 9th
Steve Jobs indicated that FaceTime wouldn’t be restricted to the iPhone 4. Now while the iPod Touch can go up to iOS 4 which has the FaceTime application, it doesn’t have the camera to support the function. The iPod Nano got a camera last year, which means it could be the iPod Touch’s turn.
MacRumors posted a few pictures of a potential bezel for the new iPod Touch from the manufacturers of the device. These images suggest a potential camera being added to the device.
FaceTime works over Wifi and uses phone numbers, however, since the iPod Touch doesn’t have calling functions, MacRumors suggests that the device will use email addresses for FaceTime.
Japan Ministry Orders Apple to Explain iPod Overheating
Jul 30th
Japan’s trade ministry said it has ordered Apple Inc’s Japanese unit to explain incidents of overheating in some models of its first generation iPod nano portable music players. The Japan arm of Apple, which recently overtook Microsoft as the world’s biggest tech company by market value, must provide by Aug. 4 details of the causes of overheating and show that it has taken steps to prevent future occurrences both in and outside Japan, the ministry said.
There have been 27 incidents of such overheating reported in Japan, including four cases where users suffered minor burns, said Seiji Shimagami, a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The ministry has repeatedly called on Apple to provide information on the preventative measures it has taken to date, he said, adding that based on Apple’s response, the ministry may call for a recall of the affected models. “Basically, warnings about the problem have not been sufficient. I think it will depend on the response we receive, but they may need to offer to exchange units that aren’t faulty as well as those that are,” Shimagami said.
The company said in a statement on its website that the issue had been traced to a single battery supplier, and that safety was a high priority for Apple. “We are taking METI’s letter in regard to the first generation iPod nano very seriously and are working closely with them to answer their concerns,” Apple said.

Apple iPod Touch 64GB Released soon
Oct 7th
Apple iPod Touch has evolved so many features and uses beyond media playback that we were not really sure what to call it anymore. Some flock to the Touch for its first-class mobile Web browser and e-mail support, while others see it primarily as a portable gaming device, and some still pick it up for good old-fashioned music and video playback. No matter how you choose to define the iPod Touch, Apple’s third-generation version has arrived, flaunting 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities.
Apple iPod Nano with Video Camera
Sep 24th
The range of new Apple iPods are upon us. Before you ask, we’re still in the dark about the iPhone 3G’s arrival, although eminent. First up on the review front is the new iPod Nano with its on-board video camera. Let me first say that I’m honestly surprised that Apple would introduce a smaller device with a camera rather than having its iPod Touch come with the same which would have been a much better sell. Nothing we can do about that now but here’s how the newest member of the Nano family performed.
