HP Sued, Allegedly Stole Printer Cartridge Secrets

Hewlett-Packard Co was sued on Wednesday by a New Jersey company that accused it of stealing and using its trade secrets to make replacement laser printer cartridges, and threatening its survival. In its complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, Turbon International Inc alleged that Hewlett-Packard had promised in December 2008 to give it lucrative contracts to manufacture replacement cartridges, and later awarded it some contracts. But the world’s largest maker of personal computers and printers shelved these plans in January 2010, after Turbon had “methodically disclosed every intricate detail of its business,” the complaint said. Turbon said Hewlett-Packard gained a “unique understanding” of the importance of the availability of empty printer cartridges to its business, and further damaged it by pushing customers to instead recycle their cartridges.

More information will be released at HP’s next press event but there are reports that the next round of web connected printers will have their own email address; getting into the cloud computing space. This would allow users to email images directly to their printer. Will this mean that the printer will not have to be configured?
HP Plans Web-Connected Printers Without PCs

Hewlett-Packard Co is preparing a broad push to make it easier to print images and information from the Internet, building an iPhone-style apps market in the process, the head of the company’s imaging group said on Wednesday. HP late last year introduced its first Web-connected home printer, which can download applications so that a user could more easily download and print out, for example, a daily crossword puzzle or children’s colouring page in one step.
