Bhavika Kunwar Awarded Ph.D.

Udaipur: Bhavika Kunwar, a research scholar from the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, has been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree for her research on the topic “Evaluation of Thrombolytic Potential of Selected Edible Ethnomedicinal Plants.”

Bhavika carried out her research under the joint supervision of Dr. Vartika Jain, Associate Professor at Government Meera Girls College, Udaipur, and Dr. S. K. Verma from Pacific Medical College.

Her study revealed that certain plants commonly consumed as food — such as drumstick (Moringa), water spinach (Kalmi Saag), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Capparis decidua (Ker), and Bathua (Chenopodium album) — exhibit positive effects on the dissolution of blood clots. These findings suggest that such plants may be beneficial in preventing or treating thrombotic conditions affecting the heart and brain.

The mention of these plants in ancient medical texts, including Sadaśiva’s traditional Ayurvedic scriptures, Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar’s Yogic Treatment and Herbal Remedies, and classical works of Ayurveda and Ethnobotany, further supports their therapeutic significance.

Bhavika’s research represents a significant scientific validation of the thrombolytic properties of edible ethnomedicinal plants and contributes meaningfully to the field of plant-based cardiovascular medicine.
