####Parents Must Monitor Behavioral Changes in Children, Alertness Can Save Childhood – Dr. Pandya

Udaipur, The inhuman act committed by a gym trainer against a 13-year-old girl has shaken the conscience of Udaipur and raised grave concerns across society. In this sensitive matter, the police have filed an FIR under sections 64(1) and 62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections 4 and 5 of the POCSO Act, which pertain to penetrative sexual assault.

However, after discussing the matter with the victim’s family, the Child Welfare Committee, and concerned authorities, child rights expert and former member of the Rajasthan State Child Commission, Dr. Shailendra Pandya, has written to the Director General of Police, Rajasthan, demanding that stronger and more appropriate sections be invoked. He urged the inclusion of sections 5(F), 6, 9, 10, 11, and 13 of the POCSO Act, along with Section 67(B) of the IT Act, to ensure stringent legal action.

Dr. Pandya emphasized that while this incident may have shocked the people of Udaipur, similar heinous crimes are reported across the state on a regular basis – from the rape of a five-year-old child to cases where homes, neighborhoods, schools, and even coaching institutions are proving unsafe for children. While police and administration remain vigilant, he stressed that citizens and parents must also share equal responsibility in ensuring child safety.

He outlined several crucial guidelines for parents:

Maintain Open Communication – Talk to children daily, especially before bedtime. Listen patiently to their experiences and assure them that they can share everything without fear of scolding.

Observe Behavioral Changes – Sudden withdrawal, irritability, crying, fearfulness, or changes in eating and sleeping habits must never be ignored.

Be Alert to Physical Signs – Unexplained scratches, injuries, pain or swelling in private parts, itching, or frequent painful urination can be warning signals.

Teach ‘Good Touch’ and ‘Bad Touch’ – Children should be made aware of safe and unsafe touch so that they can identify threats in time.

Handle Suspicions with Sensitivity – Ask questions lovingly without pressure. In serious situations, immediately contact 1098 Child Helpline or the police.

Highlighting the strict provisions of the POCSO Act, Dr. Pandya stated that this law covers not only rape but also every form of sexual harassment and exploitation, ensuring confidentiality of the child’s identity while making reporting mandatory. Failure to report such crimes, even after having knowledge, can also lead to punishment under the Act.

The Udaipur case stands as a stark warning for society. It is not merely the strength of law but also the awareness and vigilance of parents and citizens that can protect children. Caution and alertness can save a childhood.
