Focus on Your Own Life, Not Others’: S.P. Bharill’s Message of Self-Awakening

Udaipur: If a person commits a crime against society, they may be imprisoned. If someone acts against the nation, they are branded a traitor. But what happens when a person continually commits crimes against their own soul?

With this profound and thought-provoking question, renowned motivational speaker and philosopher Dr. S.P. Bharill delivered a powerful spiritual discourse titled “Am I the Greatest Criminal?” during the seven-day Jain Educational Camp organized by the Shri Kund Kund Kahan Vitarag Vigyan Shikshan Samiti at Shashwat Dham, Dabok.

According to Dr. Jinendra Shastri, Director of the Educational Committee, Minister of Shashwat Dham, and recipient of the Rajasthan Gaurav Award, the discourse was much more than a sermon. It served as a mirror to the soul, compelling every individual to place themselves in the witness box and seriously reflect upon the direction and purpose of their life.

Dr. Bharill emphasized that people spend their entire lives identifying the faults, weaknesses, and mistakes of others, yet often fail to recognize their own greatest offense—wasting the rare and precious opportunity of human life without making any effort toward the welfare of the soul. Instead, they become consumed by the pursuit of worldly achievements and material success.

He reminded the audience that life is constantly slipping away. Time passes like sand through one’s fingers, youth gradually fades, and death draws nearer with every passing moment. Yet, people continue to live under the illusion that they still have plenty of time ahead. Referring to great personalities such as Emperor Bharat, Lord Rama, and Lakshmana, he remarked that even they eventually left their mortal bodies, raising the question of how ordinary individuals can assume permanence in this world.

During the discourse, Dr. Bharill described five categories of offenders and stated that the greatest offender is the one who does not even realize that worldly existence is filled with suffering. Such a person mistakes suffering for happiness and considers worldly attachments to be achievements. He observed that the greatest misery is not suffering itself, but the failure to recognize it.

Posing a deeply moving question, he asked, “If I have never murdered anyone, never stolen wealth, and never deceived another person, but I have wasted my precious human birth, can I truly consider myself innocent?” He explained that the real crime is not merely committing external sins but failing to transform one’s life even after understanding the truth.

He further stated that human birth is not an ordinary opportunity but the greatest turning point in existence. It is through this life that a soul can progress on the path to liberation or continue wandering through endless cycles of birth and death. Therefore, the most important question is not what we have achieved in the world, but what we have done for our soul.

In the concluding part of his discourse, Dr. Bharill made an emotional appeal, urging people not to wait for another sign or opportunity. If the ultimate purpose of life is self-realization and spiritual welfare, the decision to pursue it must be made today, in the present moment. Lost time can never be recovered, but the present can still become an opportunity for awakening.

The event was attended by several distinguished members of the Jain community and social organizations, including Shantilal Jain, President of the Sakal Digambar Jain Samaj; Chandmal Kikawat, Trustee of Shashwat Dham; Abhay Bandi, General Secretary of Mumukshu Samaj; Yogesh Akhawat, President of Digambar Jain Bissa Narsinghpura Terapanth Amnay; Anil Mehta, General Secretary of Sakal Narsinghpura Samaj; Surajmal Fandot, General Secretary of Shri Digambar Dasa Narsinghpura Mumukshu Samaj, Bhinder; Paras Chittora, President of Digambar Jain Adinath Charitable Trust Sector-11; Ramesh Shah, President of Dasha Humad Samaj; Sundarlal Dagaria, President of Chandraveer Seva Sansthan; Shekhar Jetawat, President of Dasha Narsinghpura Terapanth Samaj; Suresh Padmawat, President of Chittora Samaj; Devendra Chhapya, President of Dasha Humad Samaj; Rajmal Jain, General Secretary of the Kund Kund Vitarag Vigyan Shikshan Samiti; social worker Dr. Shyam S.
