Udaipur: Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital, Udaipur, has achieved national recognition in the fields of medical education, advanced technology and innovation. The institution’s Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care has earned a significant distinction, with Associate Professor Dr Akshay Toshniwal receiving first prize in the Innovation category at the National Airway Conference held at AIIMS, New Delhi, from October 9 to 11, 2026.

Dr Toshniwal developed an affordable Wi-Fi video laryngoscope designed to make medical procedures and clinical training more accessible through cost-effective technology. The device connects to a smartphone, allowing the view of a patient’s airway to be displayed on the mobile screen. This can assist clinicians in visualising the airway during intubation and help medical students understand and learn the procedure.

The innovation highlights the potential of combining medical education with modern technology. Designed as a lower-cost alternative to expensive video laryngoscopes, the device could be useful in medical colleges for student training, practical demonstrations and supervised learning by healthcare professionals.

Following the necessary scientific evaluations and technical refinements, the device’s potential applications in emergency care, intensive care units and other clinical departments can also be assessed. Plans are underway to further develop the technology and apply for an international patent.

The achievement marks an important milestone for Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital, recognising the contribution of its faculty to medical research, education and innovation at the national level. Such initiatives have the potential to support the development of affordable medical technologies and strengthen clinical training in the future.
