Preventing Suicides Possible with a Balanced Perspective on Life and Positive Thinking – Dr. Agrawa

Kota, To curb incidents of suicide, Dr. M.L. Agrawal, a senior psychiatrist in Kota, highlighted that family, social, economic, and personal issues, mental health (depression), stress, disorders, financial problems, love relationships, exams, economic issues, loneliness, social exclusion, etc., are major contributing factors for suicide. The most common methods include hanging, consuming poisonous substances (especially among farmers), taking medication, and jumping from heights.

Maintaining a balanced perspective on life and having a positive mindset can significantly control incidents of suicide, even with the prevalence of various challenges, according to Dr. Agrawal. Under the Suicide Prevention Awareness Campaign, Dr. Agrawal emphasized that those contemplating suicide often seek help. It is essential for people close to them to listen to their pleas and offer assistance. Recognizing signs such as difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, avoidance of conversation, talking about death or suicide, sharing personal belongings, seeking forgiveness, and discussing clearing debts can help save lives.

Dr. Agrawal mentioned that India has a relatively lower suicide rate compared to Western countries, primarily due to our strong family values and cultural traditions. Anyone can provide assistance, and being a doctor or healthcare worker is not necessary. If someone doesn't feel right, it's crucial to talk openly and ask directly if they are not contemplating harm or suicide.

He emphasized that assisting individuals suffering from depression by encouraging them to consult a doctor and motivating them to seek regular treatment is essential. Instilling a sense of value in life through culture and inspiring individuals to learn the art of living in the present can also contribute positively.

Dr. Agrawal revealed that suicide is not just an issue in India but a global concern. The estimated global suicide rate is about 800,000 people per year, with more than 25 times attempting suicide. Lithuania, South Korea, Russia, China, etc., report the highest suicide rates. In India, states like Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, etc., show higher rates. Approximately 1.39 lakh people in India are succumbing to death due to suicide, with the highest rate observed between the ages of 18-45.
