Udaipur: Under the directives of Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Shankar H. Bamnia, fines were issued for violations of the COTPA Act. The action was led by Deputy CMHO Dr. Ankit Jain and National Tobacco Control Program Nodal Officer Dr. Pranav Bhawsar, in collaboration with food safety officers and the police department. The fines targeted tobacco vendors within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions and other tobacco vendors in the area.
Dr. Bamnia mentioned that the Rajasthan government appeals to the public not to sell or consume tobacco products on the last day of each month to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco use. Deputy CMHO Dr. Ankit Jain noted that during a district-level coordination committee meeting, the president of the Paan Association and the president of grocery traders were urged to comply with this monthly tobacco sales ban. Despite these appeals, compliance has not been fully achieved, which is concerning.
Dr. Pranav Bhawsar, the Nodal Officer of the National Tobacco Control Program, emphasized that tobacco vendors are prohibited from displaying tobacco products and advertisements in their shops. Additionally, they must put up signs indicating the harms of tobacco use and the illegality of selling tobacco to individuals under 18 years of age.
