**New Delhi:** The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has established a 26-member technical expert group to advance Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a "Developed India 2047." This group, led by Prof. Dr. Atul Goyal, Director General of Health Services, aims to offer recommendations and guidance on health promotion and the National Health Mission's NCD program.
Dr. Smita Joshi, a key figure in diabetes awareness for children, is a notable member of this group. Joshi, who has tirelessly advocated for Type 1 juvenile diabetes, has been pivotal in raising public awareness. She, alongside her family, undertook a significant awareness campaign from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and across the U.S., highlighting the need for national policies on diabetes in children.
Her efforts have led to the inclusion of juvenile diabetes in state budgets, addressing public awareness, and procuring essential medications. Despite these efforts, diabetes in children remains absent from national programs, resulting in many premature deaths due to inadequate medical services. The rising prevalence of Type 1 diabetes in India underscores the urgent need for comprehensive national policies. India currently leads globally in childhood diabetes cases, with the U.S. following.
