"Every individual should dedicate time daily to water conservation and source preservation," said former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu, who has held portfolios across seven ministries, including the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Railways. Speaking at a program organized at Vidya Bhavan, Udaipur, he highlighted Rajasthan’s inspiring tradition of water conservation, noting that the interlinked lakes of Udaipur serve as a remarkable example to the world. Prabhu believes that Udaipur, with its rich heritage in water conservation, can lead initiatives to make India water-rich.
Prabhu emphasized the importance of establishing citizen committees in each district to manage water resources, comprising experts and people from diverse backgrounds. He proposed that Vidya Bhavan, which already works on water and education, should serve as the starting point for this movement. He further noted that while water cannot be manufactured in a lab, its protection and conservation are within human control.
The event, coordinated by Polytechnic Principal Dr. Anil Mehta, included a presentation on the Ayad River Basin. Other speakers included Uma Prabhu, Chairperson of the Human Resource Development Foundation in Mumbai; UCCI’s former President Komal Kothari; noted energy expert Bhagwat Babel; Vidya Bhavan Treasurer Anil Shah; and Honorary Secretary Gopal Bamb.
In a light-hearted moment, Prabhu commended Dr. Anil Mehta’s work, saying that if his own name were Anil, he would feel more inspired to contribute to water and environmental causes. He entrusted Vidya Bhavan with the task of linking efforts by water-focused organizations across the nation, emphasizing that a united approach could solve India’s water challenges. Prabhu added that his recent visit to the Eklingnath Temple was to seek blessings for this very cause.
