Difference Between Appearing Good and Being Good: Acharya Maniprabha Suri

Udaipur:During a spiritual discourse held at the Vasupujya Temple located at Dadabari, Param Pujya Khartargachhadhish Acharya Shri Jinmaniprabha Suri Maharaj Saheb remarked, “When we open our eyes in the morning, all dreams disappear, fatigue fades away, and freshness returns. But the very first thought we have at that moment reflects our true personality.”

Acharya Shri will make his auspicious arrival at Keshariyaji on June 13. A large gathering of devotees from across the country is expected on this sacred occasion.

In his sermon, Acharya Shri explained the difference between appearing good and being good. “Looking good is external. Certificates and validations from others can be true or false, but self-assessment is essential. The desire to look good is worldly, while striving to be good aligns with a spiritual life. Life is short, and that is what makes it valuable. If life were eternal, it would lose its worth. Because we don’t know how long it will last, we are able to truly live it. If we did know, we might neither live freely nor accomplish anything worthwhile.”

He emphasized the importance of choosing the right path in life. “Often, we fail to make the correct choices, which leads to confusion. What we possess is rarely seen, while what we lack constantly grabs our attention — this is the root of sorrow. Our body is like a vehicle — extremely valuable, yet deceptive. Life is a crossroads where we decide our direction and destination. This body-vehicle alone can take us toward the path of liberation — no luxury vehicle in the world can do that.”

Discussing the importance of inner guidance, he added, “Who should drive this vehicle? One who seeks your benefit or one who only provides comfort? Reflection reveals that the best driver is the one who cares for your well-being. In every human, the mind is the driver. The mind takes action, but the soul bears the consequences. It takes no time for the mind to deviate. Light is not valued in brightness but in darkness.”

He concluded by saying, “There is a difference between obedience and true welfare. In this dark age of ignorance, only the divine can guide us. The one who serves the body’s welfare can serve the soul’s welfare too. Thus, make your mind beneficial, not merely pleasurable. Utilize the body-vehicle fully before it halts. Treat each moment as the last, and perform charity and good deeds with that awareness — begin today, and begin now.”
