Majlis and Mourning for Imam Hussain Begin with Muharram

Dawoodi Bohra Community Marks Islamic New Year

 

Udaipur,  The Dawoodi Bohra community commenced the Islamic New Year Hijri 1447 on Thursday, 26 June 2025. On the eve of the New Year, members of the community greeted each other with traditional wishes and celebrated with family feasts, presenting decorated food platters and enjoying communal dining in a warm and festive spirit.

According to community spokesperson Mansoor Ali Odawala, the day also marked the Urs of Syedi Khanjipir Sahib, where special decorations were arranged at the Khanjipir Dargah, followed by a communal niyaz and majlis. From this day onward, the community embarks on ten days of mourning to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S.), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala.

Various neighborhoods of the Bohra community, including Boharwadi, were adorned with lights and "Sabeels" (refreshment stalls) to honor the occasion.

From 26 June to 5 July 2025, daily majlis will be held at Wajihpura Masjid from 11:15 AM to 1:45 PM, presided over by Mulla Haji Peer Ali, where Janab Ali Asgar Khilona Wala will deliver sermons recounting the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.). In the evening majlis, Janab Mudassar Ali Zari Wala will narrate the scenes from Karbala through emotional oratory.

Simultaneously, women’s majlis will be organized daily at Rasoolpura Masjid from 5 PM to 7 PM, including Marsiya recitations and sermons.
Following this, a community niyaz (communal meal) will be served every evening from 7:30 PM at Rasoolpura Masjid and Boharwadi Jamaat Khana.

Blood Donation Camp on 2 July in Memory of Imam Hussain

A Blood Donation Camp will be held on Wednesday, 2 July 2025 (7th Muharram) by the Bohra Youth Medicare Relief Society to commemorate Imam Hussain’s legacy of sacrifice.

Traditional Ashura Procession on 5 July

On 10th Muharram (Ashura), Saturday, 5 July 2025, the traditional Azadari procession will be taken out from Mohiyadpura Masjid in Boharwadi to Wajihpura Masjid. After the procession, Janab Ali Asgar Khilona Wala will narrate the “Maqtal” (account of the martyrdom). The Sham-e-Ghariban majlis later in the evening will mark the conclusion of the 10-day mourning programs.

Women of the Dawoodi Bohra community will continue to wear black clothing for the 40 days of mourning, in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of Imam Hussain Shaheed-e-Karbala.
