Focus on preserving tribal knowledge heritage

Udaipur, – A book documenting the traditional medicinal plants used by tribal communities in Dungarpur district has been released by Shri Babulal Kharadi, Minister of Tribal Area Development Department. Authored by Dr. Neeraj Shrimali, Assistant Professor (Botany) at Shri Govind Guru Government College, Banswara, the book brings attention to rare plants like Awar Vilo, Hatdi, Bio Kantario, Aankh Phooti, Pani Vilo, Bahufali, Hargavo, Navli, Himro, Khati Vilo, and Patalkuru—plants that are no longer recognized by today’s younger generation but have long been part of the tribal medicinal tradition.

The release ceremony was held during the 10th Foundation Day celebration of Shri Govind Guru Tribal University, Banswara, where Minister Kharadi attended as the chief guest. The event was also graced by Rajya Sabha MP Chunnilal Garasiya, MLA of Garhi constituency Kailash Meena, former minister Dhansingh Rawat, and the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Keshav Singh Thakur.

Dr. Shrimali stated that the book is the result of an extensive field survey under the supervision and guidance of Professor Shafqat Rana, documenting 125 medicinal plants traditionally used by tribal communities in Dungarpur. The book provides comprehensive information including local names, preparation methods, dosage, and applications.

Co-author Prof. Shafqat Rana emphasized that the traditional knowledge of medicinal botany is a cultural legacy of tribal communities, now facing the risk of extinction. The book has been written to preserve this legacy for future generations. It aligns with the emphasis on traditional Indian knowledge systems as highlighted in the New Education Policy 2020.

The book is expected to be a valuable resource for students, forest and Ayurveda departments in the Vagad region, and researchers pursuing studies in this field. Notably, Shri Govind Guru Tribal University has incorporated traditional medicine as a skill-based course in its curriculum.

Encouraged by the Government of India and the UGC to promote scientific literature in Hindi, Dr. Shrimali has authored a total of eight books in line with the new education policy syllabus for Botany.
