Udaipur, JIn a significant step toward improving the lives of children born with cleft lip and palate, Darshan Dental College and Hospital, Udaipur, has successfully treated two infants through Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM) therapy. The initiative was led by Dr. Ruchi Arora, Head of the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, along with her dedicated team.
The two cases included a 3.5-month-old boy and a 6-month-old girl, both referred by plastic surgeons at RNT Medical College and Hospital. Following the successful NAM therapy, the 6-month-old girl underwent corrective lip surgery at RNT Hospital, which is expected to significantly improve both facial structure and functional outcomes.
Dr. Ruchi Arora explained that early intervention through NAM therapy considerably enhances the results of future surgeries. The non-surgical approach helps reshape the lip, nose, and alveolar segments before any surgical procedure, reducing the number of required surgeries and improving the child’s overall quality of life. The goal is not only aesthetic improvement but also to simplify and optimize surgical outcomes.
As a postgraduate institution, Darshan Dental College remains committed to offering such advanced treatments and views this as a socially impactful initiative. The treatment was offered completely free of cost, under the guidance of Dr. Vikas Poonia, Principal of the college. Parents were thoroughly instructed on the use, care, and follow-up procedures of the device.
Dr. Vikas Poonia also acknowledged the collaboration with Dr. Vikas Choudhary and his team from the Department of Plastic Surgery at RNT Medical College, highlighting the potential to extend this therapy to many more infants affected by congenital deformities. Future efforts will focus on expanding and enhancing this innovative therapy.
The families of the treated children expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting a visible improvement in facial appearance and sharing their relief that future surgeries now seem less complex and more manageable.
This successful intervention marks a ray of hope for many more children and their families dealing with cleft conditions in Rajasthan and beyond.
