Sri Ganganagar – The Indira Gandhi Feeder canal system will now operate in 2 out of its 4 groups, following directions from the Water Resources Minister after local legislators presented the farmers’ demand. Until now, since May 28, 2025, irrigation water was being supplied through regulation in only 1 out of 3 groups of the Indira Gandhi Canal Project. With good rainfall in dam catchment areas, water inflow in reservoirs has significantly increased.
For safety reasons, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is currently releasing around 75,000 cusecs of water from the dams. In the technical committee meeting of BBMB held on August 18, 2025, it was noted that the volume of releases may be further increased in view of rainfall forecasts. In Punjab, to safeguard upstream embankments of the Harike Headworks, the pond level has been reduced from 690.90 feet to 688.30 feet, and may be lowered further if required.
Legislators Vishwanath Meghwal (Khajuwala constituency), BJP district president Shyam Pansaria (Bikaner), farmer leader Chand Bishnoi, and senior BJP worker Santoshanand Maharaj jointly appealed to Water Resources Minister Suresh Singh Rawat, stressing the urgent need for water to protect the standing Kharif crops amid hot weather conditions. Acting promptly on their request, the minister instructed the Chief Engineer to ensure supply in 2 groups.
Accordingly, the state government has decided to operate 2 out of 4 canal groups in the Indira Gandhi Feeder to meet irrigation requirements. The government also assured that water availability for the project will be secured in consultation with the Punjab government, keeping in view both farmers’ needs and flood safety along river embankments. The state reiterated its commitment to providing water as per the irrigation requirements of farmers in the region.
