#### PIMS Hospital Closes Heart Defect Without Open-Heart Surgery

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS Hospital), Umarada, have achieved a significant medical milestone by closing a heart defect without open-heart surgery.

Ashish Agarwal, Chairman of PIMS, said a 26-year-old woman underwent a successful procedure to close a congenital heart defect without any surgical incision. The treatment was provided free of cost under the Chiranjeevi Scheme.

Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain and his team performed an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) device closure, a minimally invasive technique to seal the heart defect. Normally, the passage between the heart’s two chambers closes within a few months of birth, but in some cases, it remains open—a condition medically known as ASD or commonly as a “hole in the heart.”

Dr. Jain explained that patients with ASD may experience shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, and slower physical development. The closure device, shaped like an umbrella with two discs connected by a tubular segment, was delivered to the defect through a catheter.

The procedure was performed under the guidance of Dr. Jain, with critical support from Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat. The patient recovered successfully, marking a major achievement for PIMS Hospital.
