The inaugural session was chaired by Prof. P.C. Trivedi, Chancellor of five universities, who emphasized that nature conservation is a long-term effort that requires collective responsibility. He highlighted that responsible governance of environmental institutions is crucial to ensure sustainable use of resources, warning that mismanagement could lead to over-exploitation. Prof. Trivedi noted that while nature provides sufficient resources for human needs, excessive exploitation has led to the environmental challenges we face today.
Prof. Sacchidanand Sinha from JNU, the keynote speaker, shared insights from Amartya Sen’s work, explaining how civilizations have historically assessed nature differently. He pointed out that in the present day, nature is often treated merely as a consumable, which is inappropriate. Using the Uttarakhand landslides as an example, he warned of the consequences of improper resource evaluation. Prof. Sinha praised India’s solar energy policies and recent advancements as a boon for environmental sustainability.
Dr. Sudish Nangia, the chief guest, stressed that maintaining the balance between nature’s five elements and the seasons is one of today’s greatest challenges.
The opening ceremony began with the institute’s anthem and lighting of the lamp before Maa Saraswati, led by the institute’s founder and conference chairperson, Prof. Prahlad Rai Vyas. He highlighted the institute’s mission to engage citizens, teachers, and environmentalists in social service and consciousness-building for environmental protection, emphasizing the need to involve the youth in tackling environmental degradation. The institute operates through eleven regional centers to ensure smooth implementation of its programs.
During the conference, representatives from 18 Indian states will present their work across 10 technical sessions and 2 panel discussions. Dr. Pradeep Trikha, the organizing secretary, emphasized that climate change remains the most pressing global issue today.
