Udaipur — A landmark achievement was recorded at Pacific Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Bhilon Ka Bedla, where the Department of Chest and TB led by Interventional Pulmonologist Dr. Atul Luhadia successfully performed Pleural Cryobiopsy for the first time in the Udaipur division.
Dr. Luhadia was assisted by Dr. Nishchay, Dr. Arvind, Dr. Govind, Dr. Anshul, technicians Lokendra and Deepak, and nursing staff Ram Prasad and Balu, whose teamwork contributed to this remarkable medical milestone.
The patient, a 60-year-old woman from Salumbar, had been suffering from persistent cough and chest pain for a month. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with pleural effusion (fluid in the chest cavity), but its cause remained unclear. A thoracoscopy procedure was then conducted, during which a Pleural Cryobiopsy was performed to collect tissue samples for diagnosis.
Explaining the procedure, Dr. Atul Luhadia said that Pleural Cryobiopsy is an advanced and highly accurate diagnostic technique that uses a cryoprobe — a cold-based instrument — to extract tissue samples from the pleura or lungs. Compared to conventional biopsy methods, cryobiopsy provides larger, more reliable, and precise tissue samples, enabling quicker and more accurate diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, and other pulmonary disorders.
Dr. Luhadia further mentioned that although the procedure generally costs between ₹30,000 and ₹40,000, it was offered free of cost to the patient by the hospital management — reflecting PMCH’s strong commitment to community service and compassionate healthcare.
He added that with the introduction of this technique, PMCH can now diagnose complex lung conditions more accurately, especially in cases where traditional biopsies fail to reveal the cause. The Pleural Cryobiopsy procedure will now be regularly available in Udaipur, bringing significant benefits to more patients in the region.
PMCH Chairman Rahul Agrawal congratulated Dr. Luhadia and his entire team, calling this accomplishment a new ray of hope for lung patients across the Udaipur division. He said that this success marks the beginning of a new era of technologically advanced, effective, and patient-centered treatment in the region.
