Successful Surgery of Newborn at PIMS Hospital, Udaipur — Infant Gets New Life

Udaipur: A complex surgery on a newborn was successfully performed in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Pacific Medical College and Hospital (PIMS), Udaipur. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra informed that the baby was referred from Jagat Medical Centre, Udaipur, as he was unable to breathe properly and could neither swallow milk nor saliva. Upon examination, it was found that the infant’s food pipe had not developed properly, and he was suffering from a serious congenital condition known as tracheo-esophageal fistula. Additionally, pneumonia and infection had made the baby’s condition extremely critical. The newborn was placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, and surgery was conducted immediately after stabilization.

Dr. Mishra stated that this condition occurs in approximately one out of every 3,000–4,000 newborns. In this case, both ends of the esophagus were far apart, making the surgical connection particularly challenging. The operation lasted for about three and a half hours and was successfully completed. He added that postoperative complications are common in such cases, especially when pneumonia and infection are already present. The medical and nursing teams worked tirelessly to ensure the baby’s recovery. The infant also took considerable time to learn how to feed properly. After nearly a month of dedicated care, the baby recovered completely and was discharged from the hospital.

Along with Dr. Mishra, anesthesiologists Dr. Kamlesh, Dr. Peenu, Dr. Tyagi, Dr. Sakshi, Dr. Priya, Dr. Sumit, Dr. Atharv, and Dr. Muskan, and pediatricians Dr. Ankit, Dr. Vivek Parashar, and Dr. Rahul Khatri, as well as staff members Arun, Reshma, Ashok, Shiv, Deepak, Rahul, and Chhagan, played vital roles in the procedure and post-operative care.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal said that PIMS Hospital is fully equipped with all modern facilities, and the entire treatment of the baby was provided free of cost under the Janani Suraksha Yojana.
