Heart Hole Closed Without Open Heart Surgery at PIMS Hospital

Udaipur, The Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Udaipur, achieved a major medical milestone as doctors successfully closed a congenital hole in a woman’s heart without performing open heart surgery. The procedure was conducted free of cost under the Mukhyamantri Chiranjeevi Health Scheme.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal informed that a team led by Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain performed the Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Device Closure procedure. This technique is used to close the natural opening between the heart’s two chambers, which sometimes remains open since birth.

Dr. Jain explained that patients with ASD often experience shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, and slower physical development. In this advanced technique, a small umbrella-shaped device—consisting of two discs and a central tube—is guided through a catheter to the defect site, closing it without any incision.

The procedure was supported by Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat, who played vital roles in the surgery’s success.

Chairman Ashish Agarwal added that this achievement highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced cardiac care locally, eliminating the need for patients to travel to metro cities for such complex treatments.
