Udaipur: On the occasion of the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) City District organized a floral tribute and a seminar at the party office, Patel Circle, at 9 a.m., under the chairmanship of District President Gajpal Singh Rathore. The programme remembered Atal ji as an unparalleled statesman who brought good governance, nationalism, and democratic values into the mainstream of Indian politics.
Prominent dignitaries present on the occasion included BJP State Vice President Dr. Alka Moondada, former MP and former Assembly Speaker Shantilal Chaplot, Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena, City MLA Tarachand Jain, former Mavli MLA Dharmnarayan Joshi, former District Presidents Mangilal Joshi and Dinesh Bhatt, Ravindra Shreemali, senior leader Pramod Samar, former Deputy Mayor Paras Singhvi, Bank Chairman and former District General Secretary Dr. Kiran Jain, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Alka Moondada said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee remains a guiding light for all, especially in the field of politics. She said that throughout his decades-long political career, Atal ji maintained an unblemished image while holding several important positions, eventually rising to the office of Prime Minister. His visionary leadership, simplicity, and selfless contribution to nation-building will continue to inspire generations.
The main speaker of the seminar, Pramod Samar, State Convener of the BJP Cooperative Cell, described Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a towering figure in Indian politics—an immensely popular leader, poet, journalist, and three-time Prime Minister. He said Atal ji was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee. He received his early education at Saraswati Shishu Mandir and Victoria College in Gwalior, and later completed his postgraduate studies in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur.
Samar recalled that Atal ji was among the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, remained associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and later emerged as a frontline leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, revered today as its patriarch. Renowned for his distinctive oratory style, literary skills, and far-sighted vision, Atal ji actively participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942. He became the national president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 and later of the BJP in 1980.
Referring to Atal ji’s historic address at the Bombay convention, Samar quoted his prophetic words: “One day the darkness will fade, the sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom.” He said this statement has proven true today, with BJP governments in 13 states and NDA governments in five others.
Samar highlighted Atal ji’s contribution as a journalist, having edited publications such as Rashtradharma, Panchjanya, and Veer Arjun. He also spoke about Atal ji’s more than four decades in Parliament, serving as a member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and holding key positions such as External Affairs Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and Prime Minister.
During his tenure, Atal ji launched several landmark public welfare initiatives, including the Golden Quadrilateral Highway Project, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, and the Kisan Credit Card Scheme. These initiatives significantly strengthened India’s infrastructure and rural economy. Samar noted that today India ranks among the top countries globally in national highway construction, largely due to the foundation laid by Atal ji.
Recalling an anecdote, Samar said that even when Atal ji sat on the back benches of the Lok Sabha in his early parliamentary days, the House would listen attentively to his speeches. He mentioned that former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had once remarked that Atal Bihari Vajpayee would one day become the Prime Minister of India—a statement that later proved prophetic.
Samar further said that guided by Deendayal Upadhyaya’s philosophy of Integral Humanism, Atal ji worked tirelessly to uplift all sections of society. Even during the Emergency imposed in 1975, he spent 19 months in jail but remained steadfast in his commitment to national service. As External Affairs Minister in the Morarji Desai-led government, Atal ji gave historic importance to India’s national language by delivering the first-ever speech in Hindi at the United Nations—an achievement recorded in history.
Former District President Dinesh Bhatt and former General Secretary Dr. Kiran Jain also addressed the seminar and shared their reflections on Atal ji’s life and legacy.
