Maharana Pratap Belongs to History, Not to Any Political Party: Dr. G.L. Menaria

Udaipur.Senior historian and Founder President of the Global History Forum, Dr. G.L. Menaria, has strongly refuted recent remarks attributed to Punjab Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, calling them historically inaccurate, illogical, and misleading. Reacting to reports published in newspapers regarding a statement allegedly made by the Governor during a stone inscription program held at Gogunda on December 22, 2025—claiming that “Maharana Pratap was brought back to life for the first time by the Janata Party”—Dr. Menaria asserted that Maharana Pratap is not the legacy of any political party or ideology, but the glorious culmination of his ancestors’ valour, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to freedom.

Addressing a meeting of historians under the banner of the Global History Forum, Dr. Menaria said such statements distort historical facts and undermine the dignity of a legendary national hero like Maharana Pratap. The historians present unanimously condemned the statement and demanded that Shri Kataria issue a public clarification and tender an unconditional apology. Failure to do so, they warned, would not only diminish the constitutional stature of the Governor’s office but also adversely affect the public image of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Dr. Menaria further stated that he had personally presented a copy of his book “Maharana Pratap Mahan” to the Governor during his stay at the Circuit House in Udaipur. He emphasized that only after a serious and scholarly study of such works should comments be made on an invincible national icon and epoch-making personality like Maharana Pratap.

Several eminent historians including Global History Forum General Secretary Dr. Ajatshatru Singh Ranawat, Dr. Meenakshi Menaria, Dr. Manoj Bhatnagar, Dr. J.K. Ojha, Sohanlal Joshi, Chandan Singh Khokhawat, and Dr. Ramsingh Rathore also expressed their views. They collectively reiterated that Maharana Pratap transcends political affiliations and ideologies. It was due to Maharana Pratap’s legacy of resistance and independence that Maharana Bhupal Singh of Mewar later agreed to merge the entire Mewar princely state into the Indian Union at the request of leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru—an act that inspired other princely states to join in building a united, sovereign, and powerful India.
