Gujarat becomes the first state in the country to treat children suffering from Type-1 Juvenile Diabetes

New Delhi :  Gujarat has become the first state in the country to launch a statewide program for children aged 0-18 suffering from Type-1 Juvenile Diabetes. Under this program, all children with diabetes in Gujarat will receive free treatment at all government district hospitals and medical college hospitals across the state.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel launched this campaign at a function held in Gandhinagar recently.Under this campaign, children with Type-1 diabetes will be provided with free insulin, free glucometers, strips, ketone strips, laboratory tests, and free medical check-ups for any complications.

On this occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel announced that the state government will adopt every child with Type-1 diabetes and provide them with free treatment. He informed that in the annual budget for 2013-24, the Gujarat government had announced a provision of Rs. 13.87 crore for the treatment and prevention of Type-1 diabetes in children, with a provision to increase it annually as needed.

Chief Minister Patel said that this campaign has been launched in Gujarat in line with the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a healthy India, and in accordance with the budget allocation for the treatment of children suffering from Type-1 diabetes.  He added that the Government of India will also contribute an equal amount to this program. At the campaign launch ceremony, Chief Minister Patel appreciated the tireless efforts of two daughters of Gujarat, Dr. Smita Joshi and Dr. Shuklaben Rawal, for conducting extensive public awareness campaigns for children with Type-1 diabetes in India and abroad.

After Gujarat, Rajasthan is the second state in the country to announce in its annual budget the establishment of diabetes clinics in every district hospital for the treatment and prevention of Type 1 juvenile diabetes in children aged 0-18 years. The Government of India is also preparing to take a policy decision on this matter.  It is noteworthy that India has the highest number of cases of childhood diabetes in the world. The United States ranks second globally in this regard.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Smita Joshi, a member of the 26-member technical expert group constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Developed India @2047" and to provide recommendations, expertise, guidance, and specific suggestions regarding health promotion, and her sister, Dr. Shuklaben Anilbhai Rawal, have undertaken seven thousand kilometer-long journeys in their own car, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in India and from the East Coast to the West Coast in the United States, to create public awareness about childhood diabetes not only in India but also globally. Their efforts have been widely appreciated in India and abroad, and they have been praised.
