Medpat – Mewar Revered as the Holiest Land on Earth: Jagadguru Shri Vasant Vijayanand Giri Ji Maharaj

###Medpat – Mewar Revered as the Holiest Land on Earth

Udaipur. The land of Medpat, known today as Mewar, has been described as the most sacred region on the hundred-layered earth. When the earth was tainted by the remains of demons, the purest part that remained came to be known as Medpat — now revered as Mewar. It is on this divine land that the manifestation of Lord Eklingji took place, whose glory is eternal and incomparable. This profound narration was delivered by Anant Vibhushit Krishnagiri Peethadheeshwar, Jagadguru Shri Vasant Vijayanand Giri Ji Maharaj during the first evening session of the Raja Eklingji Shiv Mahapurana Katha, held as part of the Shri Mahalaxmi Koti Kunkumarchan Yagya Mahotsav. For many devotees, this was perhaps the first time they heard the ancient spiritual account of the origin of Mewar

.

Recounting the tale of Eklingnathji, Gurudev explained that when Lord Vishnu was in deep repose, two demons—Madhu and Kaitabh—emerged from the wax of His ears and unleashed destruction upon the earth. Distressed by their tyranny, the gods sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Despite employing rare celestial weapons, the demons repeatedly revived. The deities then humbly suggested that the Lord defeat them through divine strategy. Praising the demons, Lord Vishnu humbly asked for a boon—requesting that they be slain by His own hands. The boon manifested instantly, and both demons were annihilated. When their remains fell upon the earth, the land came to be known as Medini. King Prithu later purified the earth, and the most sacred region, surrounded by rivers, mountains, and natural serenity since the Satya Yuga, was called Medpat — the land that is now Mewar.

Jagadguru further narrated that when King Prithu cleansed and sanctified the earth, he was asked to seek a boon. The king humbly requested that the earth be known by his name, and since then, it has been called Prithvi.

In another divine episode, Gurudev narrated how Goddess Parvati once desired to enchant the gods through illusion. To fulfill her wish, Lord Shiva assumed the form of a beautiful woman and mesmerized the deities. Upon learning the truth, the gods became angered and cursed Lord Shiva with the separation of His lingam. Distressed, Lord Shiva was blessed by Goddess Parvati—declaring that the curse would transform into a divine boon, and He would forever be worshipped as Eklingji. Manifesting as the eternal self-luminous Shivling at Amarkantak, the sacred form descended through the divine Narmada and into the netherworld, from where Kamadhenu brought it back and established Eklingji. The deities who cursed Lord Shiva were also destined to remain in stone form around the temple, where they continue to be symbolically represented.

Eklingnathji is revered as the eternal protector of Mewar. As proclaimed in the divine blessing, the rivers Kotila (Jaya Banās) and Gambhiri (Vijaya) continue to flow across the region, nurturing its fertile landscape. The grandeur of Eklingji’s glory is immeasurable. During the narration, devotees experienced several spiritually uplifting moments and were deeply moved, swaying joyfully to devotional hymns.
