Lord Shiva Called Only One Devotee “Mother” – The Story of Punitavati
During the Shiv Puran Katha, Pujyapad Gurudev narrated the deeply moving life story of Punitavati, highlighting her unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva.
Punitavati’s husband once brought home two mangoes and instructed her to keep them safe. Known for his short temper, he soon left the house. During his absence, a sanyasi arrived seeking alms. Being deeply religious, Punitavati did not wish to send the ascetic away empty-handed. With no cooked food available, she offered one of the mangoes to the sanyasi.
Concerned about her husband’s reaction yet firm in her devotion, Punitavati prayed to Lord Shiva, who manifested another delicious mango by His grace. When her husband returned, she offered him both mangoes. After tasting them, he noticed a remarkable difference and questioned their source. Upon hearing the truth, he became enraged and demanded proof by asking her to bring yet another mango from Shiva. Punitavati again prayed, and Shiva granted her another mango.
Instead of believing, her husband’s anger deepened, and he abandoned her. Heartbroken, Punitavati immersed herself completely in Shiva devotion. Years later, her husband returned with another wife and a child, seeking forgiveness. This shattered Punitavati internally. She prayed to Lord Shiva to take away her youth and physical beauty, asking for a ghostly form and complete surrender at His feet.
By Shiva’s boon, Punitavati transformed into a skeletal form—becoming the only Shiv devotee in the universe whom Lord Shiva addressed as “Mother.” She travelled from the south to Mount Kailash on her hands, performing intense penance. Pleased, Lord Shiva granted her immortality and eternal worship. Even today, her temple exists in South India amid a forest of banyan trees, revered by devotees.
