New Delhi/Jaipur/Dungarpur. Senior BJP leader and former chairman of the Dungarpur Municipal Council, K.K. Gupta, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build a corridor at the Devsomnath Temple in Dungarpur district of South Rajasthan, similar to the Somnath Temple in Gujarat. This would enhance the archaeological significance of this ancient temple and boost tourism activities. Currently, this unique Devsomnath Temple, dating back to the 11th-12th centuries, is under the purview of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). He said that the Devsomnath Temple is exactly like the Somnath Temple of Gujarat and is situated on the banks of the Som River.
Gupta stated that the Devsomnath Temple, located in Dungarpur district of South Rajasthan, bordering Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar, is not only an ancient religious site but also a priceless symbol of the cultural, historical, and architectural heritage of the Vagad region. Situated near Dev village on the banks of the Som River, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Somnath form and has been a center of faith for devotees for centuries. There are differing opinions among scholars regarding the temple's history, but it is generally believed to have been built in the 11th-12th centuries. According to local legend, the temple was built in a single night, although its architectural style and craftsmanship connect it to the medieval Indian temple building tradition. It is believed that the structure of this temple is inspired by the famous Somnath Temple of Gujarat, which is why it is known as "Devsomnath". The greatest feature of the Devsomnath Temple is its unique architecture. This temple is three-storied and built of massive stones. Surprisingly, no cement, lime, or mortar was used in its construction; instead, the stones were joined using a technique of mutual balance and interlocking. The temple is supported by numerous pillars—some sources mention 108, while others mention 148 pillars—which are a testament to its strength and craftsmanship. The carvings on these pillars and walls reflect the high-quality artistry of the artists of that era.
Gupta stated that this temple is of immense religious significance. Two Shiva Lingams are installed in the sanctum sanctorum, which are considered to be self-manifested. The month of Shravan, Mahashivratri, Purnima, and other festivals hold special importance for devotees of Lord Shiva. On these occasions, grand fairs, special pujas, and Rudrabhishek ceremonies are organized here, attracting devotees not only from Dungarpur but also from surrounding districts and states. The natural beauty further enhances the temple's unique identity. The tranquil flow of the Som River, the surrounding greenery, and the hilly landscape provide devotees with an experience of spiritual peace. This is why the Devsomnath Temple is not just a place of worship, but also a center for meditation and spiritual realization. Today, this temple holds an important place in Rajasthan's religious tourism circuit. Due to the confluence of historical heritage, architectural skill, and profound devotion to Shiva, the Devsomnath Temple has become an icon of the Vagad region. This site not only reminds us of the glorious traditions of the past but also keeps faith, culture, and devotion alive in the present.
Gupta said that the construction of the Devsomnath Temple corridor will boost the tourism circuit of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
