New Delhi: Prime Minister **Narendra Modi** on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple development projects worth over **₹830 crore** in **Singur, Hooghly district, West Bengal**, and also flagged off new train services. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said that while he was in Malda yesterday, today he had the privilege of being among the people of Hooghly. He emphasized that the development of **Eastern India** is essential for a developed India, and the central government is working continuously toward this goal.

PM Modi highlighted that yesterday, India’s first **Vande Bharat Sleeper train** was inaugurated from West Bengal. He also announced that Bengal has received nearly half a dozen **new Amrit Bharat Express trains**, and today three more have been flagged off. One of these trains will strengthen connectivity between **Varanasi**, his parliamentary constituency, and West Bengal. Other Amrit Bharat Express trains have also been launched for **Delhi and Tamil Nadu**, marking an unprecedented 24-hour period for railway connectivity in West Bengal.

The Prime Minister spoke about the immense potential of **waterways in Bengal**, noting that the central government is actively supporting port-based development. He mentioned that projects related to **ports and river waterways** were recently inaugurated and laid, which are critical for West Bengal’s growth. These projects aim to develop Bengal as a hub for **manufacturing, trade, and logistics**, generating new investments, employment, and opportunities for farmers, traders, and transporters.

Regarding ports, PM Modi said that attention to ports and associated ecosystems creates **employment opportunities**, highlighting significant investment in **Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port** over the last 11 years. Under the **Sagarmala Scheme**, road connectivity to the port has been improved, and results are already visible, with Kolkata Port setting new records in cargo handling last year.

PM Modi also inaugurated the **extended Balagarh Port Gate system**, including an **Inland Water Transport (IWT) terminal** and an overbridge. The Balagarh terminal, spread over 900 acres, is being developed as a modern cargo handling facility with a capacity of approximately **2.7 million tons per year (MTPA)**. The project includes two dedicated cargo jetties – one for containerized cargo and another for dry bulk cargo. The project aims to reduce heavy cargo movement through congested urban areas, improving road safety, reducing traffic and pollution, and providing efficient market access for regional industries, MSMEs, and agricultural producers. It is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment in logistics, terminal operations, transportation, and related services.

Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated **state-of-the-art electric catamarans in Kolkata**, built domestically by **Cochin Shipyard Ltd.** for inland water transport. These **hybrid electric aluminum catamarans**, with a capacity of 50 passengers, operate in zero-emission fully electric mode and hybrid mode for longer distances. They will support urban river transport, tourism, and last-mile passenger connectivity along the Hooghly River.

PM Modi also inaugurated the **Jairambati-Barogopinathpur-Maynapur new railway line**, part of the **Tarkeshwar-Bishnupur new line project**, and flagged off a new train service between Maynapur and Jairambati via Barogopinathpur. This will provide direct rail connectivity for **Bankura district residents**, benefiting daily commuters, students, and pilgrims.

Finally, three **Amrit Bharat Express trains** were flagged off:

* **Kolkata (Howrah) – Anand Vihar Terminal Amrit Bharat Express**
* **Kolkata (Sealdah) – Banaras Amrit Bharat Express**
* **Kolkata (Santragachi) – Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express**
