68th Foundation Day of Rajasthan Sahitya Akademi Celebrated

Udaipur: The 68th Foundation Day of the Rajasthan Sahitya Akademi was celebrated on Wednesday at the Akademi’s main auditorium. A book exhibition was also organized on this occasion.

The program was chaired by Divisional Commissioner Pragya Kevalramani. Vishnu Sharma ‘Harihar’, State President (Chittorgarh Province) of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, was the Chief Guest, while District Education Officer Lokesh Bharti and renowned educationist Prof. Gayatri Tiwari were present as Special Guests.

The central theme of the ceremony was “Challenges in Literature and the Akademi.” Various speakers elaborated on contemporary challenges in literary creation, such as declining reader attention in the digital age, financial difficulties in publishing, preservation of linguistic diversity, and lack of literary interest among the younger generation. The speakers also emphasized the important role of the Akademi in addressing these challenges.

In his welcome address, Akademi Secretary Dr. Basant Singh Solanki said,

“The Akademi was established on January 28, 1958, and has since remained a leading institution for literary creation, promotion, and preservation in Rajasthan. For the past 68 years, the Rajasthan Sahitya Akademi has been safeguarding the state’s literary heritage and inspiring new generations. In today’s era, to keep literature vibrant, the Akademi must actively adopt new media so that Hindi, Rajasthani, and other regional literatures can shine on the global stage.”

Chief Guest Vishnu Sharma ‘Harihar’ stated,

“Literature is a mirror of society, but today its depth is being affected by market forces, the rush of social media, and commercialism. Institutions like the Akademi can play a vital role in confronting these challenges. Literature should not be seen merely as entertainment, but as a medium to awaken social consciousness. It is our responsibility to keep Rajasthan’s rich folk-literary traditions alive in contemporary contexts.”

In her presidential address, Pragya Kevalramani emphasized,

“Literature is not merely a play of words; it is a carrier of culture, values, and emotions. Even amid challenges, the Akademi must provide a platform to writers so they can present their creations fearlessly. If the government and the Akademi jointly encourage young writers, Rajasthan’s literature can reach new heights.”

Special Guest Prof. Gayatri Tiwari shared,

“Education and literature complement each other. Challenges such as language erosion and digital distraction are impacting literature, but institutions like the Akademi can collaborate with educational institutions to awaken literary consciousness among youth. Literary activities should be increased at school and college levels so the new generation remains connected to its cultural roots.”

District Education Officer Lokesh Bharti remarked,

“The Education Department considers literature an integral part of education. The role of the Akademi is commendable, as it not only honors writers but also disseminates literature through education. Together, we should organize programs where students and teachers actively participate in literary creation, turning challenges into opportunities.”

Senior litterateur Dr. Sharda Pota also shared her views.

Cultural performances by Team Sanstha were highly appreciated. Dr. Sharda Bhatt inaugurated the program with Saraswati Vandana, while Shaili Srivastava and her team presented a mesmerizing Odissi dance. Rajat Meghnani captivated the audience with a storytelling session based on a story by Vijaydan Detha.

On this occasion, the latest issue of the Akademi’s monthly magazine “Madhumati”, featuring new creative works and literary articles, was released.

The book exhibition at the Akademi premises showcased publications of the Rajasthan Sahitya Akademi along with books from the metropolitan unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, which remained a major attraction. Art exhibitions by Hemant Joshi, Shailendra Sharma of Anayaas Art Expression, artworks by Nilofar Munir, Ruchi Sukhwal’s Artisan Potli Craft, and displays by sketch artist Rahul Mali left a strong impression on visitors.
