Jaipur.Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde stated that journalism should not only convey news but also carry ideas and values. He emphasized that journalism must become the voice of the deprived and marginalized sections of society.
The Governor was addressing the inaugural session of a conference organized by the National Media Foundation, New Delhi, at the Rajasthan International Centre on Thursday. He said journalism is a major medium of public education and recalled its significant role during India’s freedom movement, when the media played a vital role in creating public awareness.
Governor Bagde noted that Indian Journalism Day is observed every year on May 30, marking the publication of the first Hindi newspaper Udant Martand, started by Jugalkishore Shukla from an Indian perspective. He also mentioned that the first English newspaper in India, Hicky’s Gazette, was published on January 29, 1780, but it primarily served as a bulletin for information exchange. He added that journalism is called the fourth pillar of democracy because it protects the rights of the people while also making them aware of their duties.
Honouring Excellence
On the occasion, several individuals were honoured for their outstanding contributions in journalism and other fields. Those felicitated included senior photojournalist Purushottam Sharma, public relations professional Gopendra Nath Bhatt, journalist Mukesh Meena (President, Pink City Club Jaipur), journalist Radha Raman Sharma, Hemjeet Malu, Managing Editor of Swar Sarita (Veena Group) for art and cultural journalism, RAS officer Praveen Khandelwal, RPS officer Sandeep Saraswat, Dr. Sunil Dhadich, Shri Seesaram Bhawariya, and others.
At the beginning of the programme, National Media Foundation National President Rajendra Jain welcomed the Governor, while National Advisor Dr. O. P. Yadav presented an overview of the Foundation’s activities.
