Journalists should connect with social issues and guide society in a new direction through positive journalism - Shri Vasudev Devnani

Jaipur: The Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Shri Vasudev Devnani, called upon journalists to connect with social issues and guide and direct society through positive journalism.  He also urged them to strengthen democracy, instill a sense of patriotism in the younger generation, and highlight our country's ancient culture, so that India can become a leader in the world.

Speaker Devnani was addressing the closing ceremony of the national conference organized by the National Media Foundation, New Delhi, at the Rajasthan International Centre in Jaipur on Thursday evening.

Devnani appealed to journalists to fulfill their role as the fourth pillar of democracy in its true sense and participate in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India @ 2047. He stated that today India is on its way to becoming the world's third-largest economic power, and there is hope that India will become the world's largest economic power in the future. The Speaker said that India has never sought to dominate the world through aggression. Our great country does not want to become a superpower in any way; rather, we want to become a great guide for the entire world through our eternal values, and we believe in developing peace, harmony, love, trust, and a sense of belonging in the world. The whole world is our family, and universal brotherhood and non-violence are our guiding principles, which is why we were a world leader before, are today, and will continue to be a world leader in the future.

Devnani said that the world is currently at a critical juncture. In such a situation, journalists must play their crucial role in raising public awareness by uncovering the truth. Today, no one is speaking out against the human rights violations taking place in our neighboring country, Bangladesh. In this situation, the Indian media should come forward to expose the true picture to the world.  At the same time, understanding its immense responsibilities, it should refrain from publishing any exaggerated news that could in any way jeopardize India's security interests.

Commenting on the National Media Foundation's demands for various facilities for journalists and the enactment of a security law for them,Devnani said that first and foremost, all of you need to unite and, with the right political perspective, reflect on and analyze your own biases and objectivity.

Devnani also advised journalists to engage in self-reflection and said that while editors once played a decisive role in shaping the direction and content of newspapers, that authority is gradually shifting into the hands of the owners.  As a result, editorial independence is shrinking, and commercial interests appear to be dominating journalism. From news selection to presentation, the pressure of profit and influence is clearly felt. In such a scenario, the democratic character of the media weakens. Until the reins of newspapers return to the hands of journalists and editors, the media will not be able to fulfill its role as the true fourth pillar of democracy. He stated that the Rajasthan government, compared to other states, has taken more positive steps to protect the interests of journalists, including provisions for pensions and medical facilities. Other states should also emulate this.

Speaker Devnani said that today, the media encompasses various forms, including print, electronic, and social media, but the importance of print media has not diminished.  Therefore, journalists should fulfill their responsibilities with complete impartiality and honesty. He said that journalists played a crucial role during the freedom movement and the Emergency. Today, with the same missionary spirit, journalists should dedicate their energy to highlighting the heroic tales of Rajasthan's brave sons and warriors like Maharana Pratap and Surajmal, and figures like Panna Dhay and Meera, along with Rajasthan's rich history, art, culture, heritage, and tourism. They should also delve deep to uncover the truth, prioritize public concerns, promote talent in society, and become agents of social change and the voice of the people.

During his tenure as Education Minister, he also spoke about replacing the chapter on Akbar the Great with a chapter on Maharana Pratap the Great in the school curriculum and adding biographies of 200 great personalities to the curriculum to educate the new generation of children about the country's great heroes. He appealed to the journalists to bring the glorious history of Rajasthan's valor, bravery, sacrifice, struggle, and victories to the forefront for the new generation so that the future citizens of the country can be well-versed in our civilization and culture.

On this occasion, Assembly Speaker Devnani unveiled the souvenir of the National Media Foundation and presented awards and mementos to journalists and social workers for their outstanding work.  Earlier, National Media Foundation President Rajendra Jain welcomed Assembly Speaker Devnani, and National Advisor Dr. O.P. Yadav provided information about the foundation's achievements and activities to date, stating that journalist representatives from 11 states participated in the conference.
