Udaipur in Parliament: MP Dr. Rawat Calls for Promotion of Underground Mining in Scheduled Areas

Udaipur:MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat urged Parliament to develop dedicated policies, modern technology, and necessary resources to promote underground mining in scheduled areas. He emphasized that this approach would protect tribal livelihoods, cultural practices, and the environment while enabling a balanced and sustainable mining model.

Under **Rule 377**, Dr. Rawat highlighted that most of India’s major mining regions—covering coal, aluminum, and iron ore—are predominantly located in tribal and scheduled areas. Many tribal communities in these regions still face poverty, limited livelihood options, and socio-economic disparities. Their lives and earnings largely depend on nature, forests, and minor forest produce, which are integral to their cultural identity, beliefs, and traditional way of life.

Dr. Rawat pointed out that current conventional **open-cast mining** practices are causing large-scale land acquisition, forced displacement, environmental degradation, and social unrest, severely affecting tribal life cycles. In contrast, **underground mining** offers lower land usage, minimal displacement, and better environmental protection, but its adoption in India remains limited.

He urged the government to align with India’s development goals and the spirit of the **Reform Express**, advocating for policies, technology, and resources to expand underground mining in scheduled areas. Such measures would safeguard tribal livelihoods, preserve cultural and religious practices, protect the environment, and promote a balanced and sustainable mining framework.
