Illiterate Inmates Being Made Literate Inside Prison

ADJ Kuldeep Sharma Conducts Weekly Inspection of Central Jail

Udaipur: Under the aegis of the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority and as per the direction of Shri Gyan Prakash Gupta, Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Udaipur, ADJ Kuldeep Sharma carried out a weekly inspection of the Central Jail Udaipur.
During the inspection of the male prison ward, ADJ Kuldeep Sharma reviewed the medical facilities, food, tea, and breakfast being provided to the inmates. He also gathered information regarding the availability of free legal aid, appeals, parole, and related legal assistance. Under the Legal Aid Defense Counsel Scheme implemented by the District Legal Services Authority, Udaipur, inmates were informed about the availability of legal representation. It was observed that the male prison currently houses inmates beyond its sanctioned capacity.
The inspection further revealed that many inmates lodged in the jail, particularly those from remote and rural areas, are uneducated. Due to their illiteracy, they often hesitate to sign documents related to appeals, parole, free legal aid, and other legal matters. In response, Central Jail Superintendent Rajpal Singh initiated literacy classes within the prison.
Over the past two months, nearly 50 inmates have learned to read and write. Male inmates are being taught for three hours daily using classroom-style instruction on a board. ADJ Kuldeep Sharma personally assessed the inmates’ progress by writing words—both with and without vowel markers—on the board and asking each inmate to read them aloud.
He also noted that inmates are engaged in productive work inside the jail factory, manufacturing coolers, carpets (durries), and other iron goods. Several inmates who were completely illiterate at the time of admission have now learned to read, write, and even sign their names. Gradually, books from the prison library will be provided to them for reading. Some inmates have also been assisted in filling out open school forms so they can complete their Class 10 education.
Superintendent Rajpal Singh and other jail officials were present during the inspection.
