Chittorgarh: Panic erupted at Hindustan Zinc’s Chanderia Smelting Complex on Monday morning when a report of SO₂ (sulfur dioxide) gas leakage was received from the “Hydro-2 Roaster Plant.” The zinc management and district administration immediately sprang into action, initiating rescue and relief operations. After swift containment, it was revealed that the incident was a mock drill, bringing relief to all involved.
Conducted Under NDMA Guidelines:
The drill was organized as a Level-3 Emergency Response Mock Drill at Chanderia Smelting Complex following the directives of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India. At 11:01 AM, a gas leak alert was triggered in the HGP outlet duct area of the Hydro-2 Roaster Plant. The plant’s fire brigade, ambulance, and rescue teams promptly arrived on-site and began emergency operations.
Coordination with Administration and Nearby Industries:
The District Collector, Alok Ranjan, and Superintendent of Police, Manish Tripathi, were immediately briefed about the situation. Assistance was also sought from nearby industries, including Birla Cement Works and IOCL Jalmupura. As part of the drill, search and rescue operations were conducted, and the plant’s fire hydrant system along with the fire brigade helped contain the scenario.
Monitoring and Command:
Alok Ranjan, the Location Head and Site Emergency Controller of Chanderia Smelting Complex, monitored the entire operation from the control room, issuing necessary instructions. Hindustan Zinc’s Safety Head, Balchand Patidar, and Incident Controller K. Mahesh Kannan led the on-site rescue operations to bring the situation under control.
Immediate Containment:
Before external assistance could arrive, the zinc administration had already successfully contained the situation. Senior Factory and Boiler Inspector Suraj Prakash Jangid, Gangrar police officials, the police control room team, and Chanderia and Chittorgarh police were present. Additional support came from the Shri Sanwaliya General Hospital ambulance, Birla Cement fire brigade, 108 ambulance, Gangrar ambulance, Chittorgarh fire services, and GRP, all of whom played a key role in the safety arrangements.
Officials present described the mock drill as highly successful and commendable, emphasizing the need to maintain the same level of preparedness in real emergencies.

During the drill, IOCL’s Deputy Manager (Safety) Ankit Kulhari; Chanderia Lead Zinc Smelter representatives Pushpendra Meena, Ravindra Chauhan, Bherulal Jat, and Subhash Chandra Badasra; Safety Department personnel Abhishek Kothari, Vinay, Shubham Sahu, and Usha Sharma; and Security Department staff G. Malleshm, Priyanka, Devraj Singh Chundawat, and Aishwarya Paliwal were actively involved.
