Economic Losses in Dairy Animals Due to Mastitis: Dr. Berwal

Sriganganagar: A non-institutional one-day training camp on the prevention and treatment of mastitis (Thnela disease) in livestock was organized in Mirjewala village by the Animal Science Center, Suratgarh, operating under the Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Bikaner.

During the program, the Center In-Charge, Dr. Rajkumar Berwal, explained that mastitis is a significant problem in dairy animals caused by poor management practices, leading to infections in the udder. This not only affects the health of animals but also poses a risk of contamination in milk, which is a part of our daily consumption. Symptoms of mastitis include swelling of the udder, redness, change in milk color, curdling, or presence of blood in the milk.

Dr. Berwal advised that infected animals should be separated from healthy ones and their milk should be collected last. He emphasized that raw milk should not be consumed. Preventive measures include dry cow therapy, laboratory testing of milk, and consulting a nearby veterinarian for proper treatment.

The training also provided detailed guidance on milk testing methods such as the Peach Strip Test and the California Mastitis Test (CMT), as well as free testing of urine, dung, and blood conducted by the Suratgarh Animal Science Center.
