“Katha-Kathan” Program Brings Folk Art to Life, Indian Folk Art Mandal Enthralls Audience

Udaipu: Under the joint organization of Jheverchand Meghani Academy and the Gujarati Department of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University, the Katha-Kathan style program of principles and presentation featured a spectacular showcase of Indian folk art. The Indian Folk Art Mandal, along with artists from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, delivered powerful performances of Rajasthan’s distinct storytelling styles, including Fad Vachan, Shivji Ka Byavala, and Kavad Vachan, leaving scholars, connoisseurs, and art enthusiasts deeply moved.

Dr. Laik Hussain, Director of the institution, elaborated on Rajasthan’s three major storytelling styles, emphasizing that Rajasthan holds a unique place not just in India but globally due to its rich art and cultural heritage. The state’s folk arts, through their distinctive costumes, music, dance, and expressive performance, naturally captivate audiences. Particularly, storytelling arts like Fad, Bhapang, Kavad, Kathputli, and Charbet Kathas are considered leading traditions. Storytelling through music, especially Kavad performances, is highly unique and extraordinary.

During the national program, while scholars presented lectures and research papers, Dr. Hussain highlighted Rajasthan’s diverse storytelling styles in his presentation, focusing on their performance methods and cultural significance.

Notable Performances:

  • Sugna Ram Bhopa and his troupe presented the biography of Pabuji through the Fad style.

  • Nurdeen Mewati, a Bhapang musician, vividly narrated the Shivji Ka Byavala story, depicting Lord Shiva’s marriage through Bhapang accompaniment.

  • Jagdish Paliwal and his team performed scenes from the Ramayana in the Mewar Kavad tradition, delivering a highly impactful performance.

The program was inaugurated with a lamp lighting ceremony by Professor Niranjan Nath Patel, Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chand Wardia, President of Jheverchand Meghani Academy, Dr. Laik Hussain, and folk art expert Prof. Balwant Dhani, marking the beginning of an enriching celebration of India’s storytelling heritage.
