New Delhi: Indian Railways is enhancing its track maintenance processes through modern technology and standardized components. In a high-level meeting held Monday at Rail Bhavan under the chairmanship of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, key decisions were taken to improve current methods of track laying, jointing, and health monitoring.
The Minister emphasized the development of a smartphone-enabled, AI-based application for turnout readings and real-time monitoring of track conditions under an AI-driven track surveillance system. He stressed that operational speed increases must not come at the cost of safety, and train schedules should not be compressed in a way that compromises security. Track safety and maintenance will remain the highest priority.
To ensure better asset upkeep and improved operational performance, extended maintenance blocks are being implemented to provide adequate time for infrastructure servicing.
Under plans to enhance the performance of fastening systems, the Minister directed the increased use of indigenous fasteners to promote self-reliance and reduce dependency on limited suppliers. He urged the Railway Board and senior officials to ensure that maintenance receives the time and attention it deserves.
Earlier reforms include improvements in onboard passenger services, expansion of Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals with enhanced facilities to meet freight targets, implementation of the RailTech policy and portal, and digitization of the Railway Claims Tribunal (e-RCT) for faster and paperless claim settlements.
