####Echoes of Tradition: “Smritiyan” Concert Celebrates the Legacy of Pandit Chatur Lal in Udaipur

Udaipur witnessed a mesmerizing evening of rhythm, melody, and soulful devotion as the “Smritiyan” Concert was organized at the open-air amphitheatre of Shilpgram to commemorate the birth centenary of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Chatur Lal. The grand musical tribute was hosted by the Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society in collaboration with Hindustan Zinc Limited, bringing together some of the finest artists of Indian classical and Sufi music.

The evening opened with a promising performance by Hindustan Zinc Talent Hunt winner Samarth Janve, who presented a Chhota Khayal in Raag Varathi set to Teentaal, followed by the devotional bhajan “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.” His performance was beautifully supported by Naveen Rao on tabla, Yashonandan Kumawat on pakhawaj, Dushyant Charan on harmonium, and Saloni Rawat on vocal accompaniment.

A captivating international flavor was added by Swedish santoor artist Moa Danielsson, whose soulful rendition of Raag Bageshri created a tranquil musical atmosphere. Her performance included a Vilambit Teentaal, moving gracefully into Madhyalaya and concluding with an energetic Jhala and rhythmic Sawaal–Jawaab. Accompanying her on tabla was Pranshu Chatur Lal, grandson of the legendary maestro, whose dynamic strokes and rhythmic brilliance earned thunderous applause.

The highlight of the evening was the spellbinding jugalbandi by Padma Bhushan awardee Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on the Mohan Veena and Pandit Salil Bhatt on the Satvik Veena. Their harmonious interplay in the self-composed Raag Vishwaranjani enthralled the audience through a soulful alaap, jor alaap, and compositions in Vilambit and Drut Teentaal.

Adding a local cultural touch, the duo presented the beloved Rajasthani folk melody “Kesariya Balam Aavo Ni Padharo Mhare Des”, drawing loud applause from the audience. They concluded with a vibrant folk-based composition “Hichki” inspired by Raag Kirwani, again accompanied by Pranshu Chatur Lal on tabla.

The grand finale transformed the musical evening into a spiritual celebration as the renowned Niazi Nizami Brothers from Delhi presented a powerful Sufi Qawwali performance. Beginning with Hazrat Amir Khusro’s timeless composition “Chaap Tilak Sab Chheeni…”, the ensemble soon had the audience immersed in devotion and rhythm. Popular Sufi renditions such as “Khwaja Mere Khwaja,” “Dama Dam Mast Qalandar,” and “Tumhein Dillagi Bhool Jani Padegi” created an electrifying atmosphere.

The ensemble featured Haider Nizami, Hasan Nizami, and Imran Nizami, with Faheem Khan on tabla, Humsar Hussain on dholak, Dilshad Khan and Aman Ali in chorus, and Nasir Ahmed on the electric banjo, also known as the bulbul tarang.

Speaking about the occasion, Meeta Chatur Lal highlighted that the year marks the 100th birth anniversary of Pandit Chatur Lal, one of the pioneering tabla maestros who introduced Indian rhythm to global audiences. The 26th edition of the Smritiyan Concert was dedicated to celebrating his extraordinary musical legacy.

The event was graced by District Collector Namit Mehta as the chief guest, along with Anupam Nidhi, CSR Head of Hindustan Zinc Limited, Charanjit Chatur Lal, and several distinguished citizens. The concert was supported by RSMML Limited and Rajasthan Tourism, with Pride Hotel as the hospitality partner and Sandy’s Travel Tales as the digital partner.

The evening concluded with standing ovations, leaving the audience immersed in the timeless magic of classical music, Sufi devotion, and the enduring legacy of Pandit Chatur Lal.
