New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated that development and the environment should not be viewed as opposing forces, but rather as complementary to each other.
Birla addressed the Water Transversality Global Awards & Conclave 2026 on Friday evening at the India International Centre in New Delhi. Highlighting the spiritual and life-sustaining significance of water in Indian culture, he emphasized the importance of public participation, noting that meaningful and sustainable change requires active engagement from the panchayat level to Parliament.
He stressed the adoption of the “Reduce, Reuse, Recharge, and Recycle” principle for water conservation. Referring to initiatives such as “Catch the Rain” and the “Jal Jeevan Mission”, Birla underscored the critical role of citizen participation in ensuring their success.
Birla highlighted that water conservation is vital to secure humanity’s future, and called on lawmakers and all stakeholders to work collaboratively toward this goal. He emphasized the importance of water conservation, sustainable development, and global cooperation, noting that platforms like the International Water Forum (IWF) play a significant role in addressing global water challenges. However, he cautioned that real change is only possible when citizens become aware and responsible about water preservation, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.
He further observed that water, energy, health, and the environment are deeply interconnected. Birla highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy and green initiatives, stating that developments in solar energy, wind energy, and green hydrogen are strengthening India’s climate commitments and driving the nation toward sustainable development.
