‘Raj Sakhi Mela’ Inaugurated: A Unique Celebration of Folk Culture and Handicrafts

Udaipur: As part of the Rajasthan Day Week celebrations, the seven-day Raj Sakhi Mela was inaugurated on Sunday at the Town Hall complex, Municipal Corporation grounds, under the joint aegis of the District Administration and Rajasthan Rural Livelihoods Development Council (RAJIVIKA). The event was graced by Phool Singh Meena, MLA of Udaipur Rural, as chief guest. A large gathering of self-help group (SHG) women, public representatives, officials, and citizens attended the inauguration.

MLA Phool Singh Meena highlighted that self-help groups are becoming a strong vehicle for economic empowerment of rural women. Through these groups, women are becoming self-reliant and contributing significantly to their family income using their skills. He added that events like this mela provide a platform for rural women to showcase and market their products, giving their work greater recognition and encouragement.

During the program, MLA Meena and social worker Gajpal Singh took a significant step toward digital empowerment by distributing tablets to SHG women. Additionally, under the Custom Hiring Centers initiative of the Agriculture Department, tractors and agricultural implements were distributed to farmers to promote modern farming techniques.

Khyalilal Khatik, District Project Manager of RAJIVIKA, stated that the mela will run for seven days, open to the public from 10 AM to 10 PM daily. The fair features attractive stalls displaying handicrafts, traditional clothing, household items, decorative products, and local food made by women from SHGs across various districts. These stalls provide rural women a platform to sell their products and gain recognition for their entrepreneurial skills.

For visitors’ engagement and entertainment, the mela also hosts traditional sports activities. The food zone offers a variety of local dishes, introducing attendees to Rajasthan’s traditional culinary culture. The exhibition of rural products and handicrafts remains a key attraction.

Cultural performances will be held daily from 8 PM to 10 PM, showcasing Rajasthan’s rich folk traditions. The schedule includes:

  • March 15: Rajasthani folk dance and cultural evening

  • March 16: Sufi music and Bollywood orchestral performance

  • March 17: Instrumental music and jugalbandi performances

  • March 18: Puppet shows, cultural enactments, and Mayur (peacock) dance

  • March 19: Magic shows, costume contests, and Gwari dance

  • March 20: Kachhi Ghodi dance and special Rajasthani folk music by Langa-Langa brothers

The mela combines traditional sports competitions, handicraft exhibitions, rural entrepreneurship displays, and SHG women’s products, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with Rajasthan’s art, culture, and traditions while providing economic empowerment to rural women.
