14-Year-Old Heart Patient Gets New Life Through BMV Technique at PIMS

Udaipur: The Department of Cardiology at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully treating a 14-year-old child suffering from heart disease using the Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) technique.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal stated that the child received treatment free of cost under the Bhamashah Scheme.

Dr. Mahesh Jain, Head of the Cardiology Department, explained that the child was diagnosed with a severely narrowed mitral valve. Upon detailed examination, it was found that the patient was suffering from rheumatic heart disease, which had caused significant narrowing of the mitral valve.

Traditionally, such cases require repeat open-heart surgery. However, considering the associated risks and complications, Dr. Jain opted for the advanced Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) technique. This minimally invasive procedure allows for faster recovery and reduces the duration of hospital stay.

The procedure was successfully performed by Dr. Mahesh Jain and his team. Cardiac anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat played crucial roles in the treatment.

What is the BMV Technique?

Dr. Jain explained that Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) is a minimally invasive procedure in which a special balloon catheter is used to gradually dilate the narrowed mitral valve, allowing normal blood flow to resume.

This technique is particularly beneficial for patients suffering from rheumatic heart disease, where the valve becomes obstructed. Compared to open-heart surgery, BMV carries lower risk and offers quicker recovery.

Dr. Jain added that in the coming years, the BMV technique could prove to be a boon for many heart patients, especially for those who want to avoid or are unable to undergo open-heart surgery.
