Udaipur: On the occasion of World Water Day, a special program on the theme “Water and Gender Equality” was organized by the Department of Soil and Water Engineering at Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology. The event was held at Sundar Bai ki Baori, located at the CTAE farm in Udaipur.
The chief guest of the program was Prof. Pratap Singh, while the guest of honor was Prof. Basant Maheshwari from Western Sydney University.
As part of the event, students and university staff jointly carried out a cleanliness drive at Sundar Bai ki Baori. NCC cadets also presented posters highlighting the importance of water conservation.
The program began with Jal Pujan (water worship), a traditional Vedic practice. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Pratap Singh emphasized that India, despite having the largest population in the world, possesses only about 4% of global water resources. He stressed the need for careful and efficient use of water. He also mentioned that the university is actively conducting research on crops that yield more with less water.
Prof. Basant Maheshwari highlighted the importance of village-level interventions for groundwater recharge management and sustainable groundwater use. He emphasized that maintaining soil and water quality is a shared responsibility and called for mindful water usage.
Dr. Sunil Joshi explained that adopting sensor-based irrigation techniques in agriculture can save 30–70% of water, and that the university is continuously working on research in this area. Dr. S. S. Lakhawat spoke about planting fruit-bearing trees and achieving higher yields with less water.
Dr. K. K. Yadav elaborated on the university’s irrigation water management projects aimed at water conservation and improving groundwater quality. Dr. Manjeet Singh discussed ongoing projects related to water conservation and groundwater recharge, and also highlighted water-saving techniques such as protected cultivation, hydroponics, and automation.
On this occasion, several dignitaries including Dr. R. C. Purohit, Dr. H. K. Mittal, Dr. Sanwal Singh, Dr. Naveen Jain, Dr. B. G. Chhipa, Er. Balram, Dr. Sachin Wandkar, Er. Kalu Singh, and Dr. Yogita Dashora, along with students and participants, took a pledge to conserve and save water.
