&TV Artists Celebrate World Theatre Day by Reflecting on Their Journey from Stage to Screen

Mumbai: Theatre has long served as the foundation for many successful actors, shaping their craft, discipline, and depth in performance. On the occasion of World Theatre Day, artists from &TV shared their experiences of transitioning from theatre to television, highlighting how the stage prepared them for acting, the challenges they faced, and the lasting influence of theatre on their work today. Among the featured artists were Brij Bhushan Shukla (Suresh Pandey in Gharwali Pedwali) and Asif Sheikh (Vibhuti Narayan Mishra in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain 2.0).

Brij Bhushan Shukla, portraying Suresh Pandey in Gharwali Pedwali, said, “My journey in acting began with theatre, where I truly learned to live a character. Theatre teaches discipline, timing, and the art of connecting directly with the audience. There are no second chances—every performance is immediate and real. Moving to television required me to adapt to camera angles and retakes, which was a different experience. But the foundation I gained in theatre—especially expression, voice control, and natural ease—has been invaluable. I try to bring the same authenticity and energy to my character in Gharwali Pedwali. Theatre will always be my first teacher, guiding me in every role.”

Asif Sheikh, known for playing Vibhuti Narayan Mishra in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain 2.0, added, “Theatre played a crucial role in shaping me as an actor. It taught me the nuances of performance—body language, voice modulation, and timing, particularly in comedy. Performing live for an audience brings a unique energy and makes you sharper, more flexible, and confident. Television, on the other hand, demands controlled and subtle acting, but the essence of performance remains the same. My theatre background helps me bring depth and naturalness to my TV roles, especially in comedy, where timing is everything. I still carry those lessons with me and consider theatre the purest form of acting, which continues to inspire me every day.”
