Nowadays, the biggest concern for homemakers is the rising price of LPG and the anxiety over its supply. To free yourself from this worry, many smart alternatives are already available to us. Induction cooktops, electric cookers, microwaves, air fryers, PNG (piped natural gas), biogas, and solar cookers can help you create a hybrid kitchen and save 50-70% of your gas usage. These options are clean, smart, and healthier.
I have been practicing smart cooking for many years now. My dependence on LPG has reduced drastically. Today, I am sharing those practical tips with you that will help you save both time and money, so you can live and cook without any tension.
1. Induction Cooktop
An induction cooktop is the need of the hour for preparing all kinds of meals quickly. It is 80-90% energy efficient and produces no smoke or fumes.
Price: ₹3,000 – ₹5,000
2. Electric Cooker (Electric Rice Cooker / Multi Cooker)
A perfect option for Indian cooking. You can easily make rice, dal, vegetables, khichdi, idli, soup, biryani, and steaming in it. Many new models now come with advanced features and even pressure cooking functions. These cookers also run on inverters and consume very little electricity (600-800W).
Price: ₹2,000 – ₹8,000
Benefit: It can be 20-30% cheaper than LPG.
3. Microwave Oven
A microwave is not just for reheating leftovers. Indian food can be comfortably cooked in it too. You can make rice, vegetables, soup, pasta, daliya, kadhi, carrot halwa, dry sabzis, kheer, and many more traditional dishes.
It is also excellent for baking, grilling, and convection cooking.
Price: Basic models start from ₹5,000. Good convection models range from ₹10,000 – ₹25,000.
Monthly electricity cost: ₹250 – ₹450 (for moderate use)
Advantage: Very fast, retains nutrients better, and perfect for small portions. Once you learn the right cooking techniques, it becomes a powerful tool in your kitchen.
4. Air Fryer – Healthy, Oil-Free Crispy Cooking
An air fryer cooks food by circulating hot air, giving you the taste of fried food with very little or zero oil. Making paneer tikka, bhindi, aloo, chicken, roasted vegetables, etc. becomes super easy.
You can also make cakes, pizza, tandoori naan, kulcha, samosa, pakoras, and even some sweets without deep frying.
Price: 4–6 litre models are available for ₹2,500 – ₹12,000.
Monthly electricity cost: ₹200 – ₹400 (for snacks and side dishes)
It is an excellent option for Indian families for making healthy snacks and side dishes.
5. PNG (Piped Natural Gas)
In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, etc., piped gas is cheaper, hassle-free, and comes with a monthly bill that is usually lower than cylinder gas.
6. Biogas
In villages, you can produce your own gas from kitchen waste and cow dung. This is an excellent option for rural households. In places like Barmer and Dungarpur, women are already cooking on biogas.
Cost: ₹10,000 – ₹25,000 (with subsidy) + you get free fertilizer as a bonus.
7. Solar Cooker
In sunny regions, nothing beats solar cookers as they use completely free energy. Main types available:
Box Type Solar Cooker: Up to 100°C – ideal for rice, dal, vegetables, chapati, and boiling milk. MNRE-approved, lasts 5–10 years, subsidy available.
Parabolic Dish Cooker: Higher temperature (100°C+), good for frying and faster cooking.
Advanced (Surya Nutan): Indoor use with heat storage, works 24×7. Also has hybrid (solar + electricity) mode. Baking and frying possible.
Community Models: Perfect for temples and large families.
Benefit: Can save 35–40 LPG cylinders per year. No running cost, nutrients remain intact.
Price: ₹3,000 – ₹30,000 (much lower with subsidy).
(Note: Needs backup on cloudy days or evenings.)
Practical Tip: Adopt Hybrid Cooking
Use a combination of appliances:
Main meals on Induction / Electric Cooker / Microwave
Snacks & sides in Air Fryer
Lunch in Solar Cooker
This way, one LPG cylinder can easily last 45–60 days, and you can save ₹300–800 per month.
Take advantage of government subsidies on solar cookers and biogas plants.
Start Small
Begin with just one induction cooktop, an electric cooker, and an air fryer. Shift one or two dishes every day to these appliances.
A smoke-free kitchen is much better for the health of women and children. Even in peak summer, cooking becomes comfortable and easy.
By adopting these smart alternatives, tension-free, affordable, and delicious cooking is now totally possible!
