Government Takes Major Step to Beautify Mahi Islands in Banswara, the ‘City of Hundred Islands’

Tourism Development Planned in the Mahi Dam Area

Jaipur/Udaipur: The Mahi Dam, a key source of irrigation and hydroelectric power in the Vagad region, is set to emerge as a new hub for tourism. The picturesque ‘Hundred Islands’ in the dam reservoir area, along with the surrounding land, will now be developed through planned tourism initiatives. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the state government has taken a major step to provide this region with a distinct tourism identity.

The Administrative Reforms Department has formed a high-level committee tasked with preparing a detailed master plan for tourism development in the dam area. The plan will focus on controlled and eco-friendly tourism activities, promoting both water conservation and the creation of local employment opportunities.

High-Level Committee to be Chaired by Udaipur Divisional Commissioner

The committee will be chaired by the Divisional Commissioner of Udaipur and will include key officials such as the Banswara District Collector, Chief Engineer of Water Resources, Banswara, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Banswara, Superintending Engineer of Public Health Engineering, Regional Officer of the State Pollution Control Board, Assistant Town Planner, Banswara, and Assistant Director of Tourism. The Superintending Engineer of Mahi Project Construction Division will serve as Member Secretary, with the Water Resources Department as the administrative department for the committee.

The committee will determine land use, demarcation, leasing/allocation, and rules for water sports and tourism activities in the dam reservoir, islands, and surrounding government and private land. It will also ensure strict compliance with environmental standards and prevent any form of water pollution.

Focus on Water Activities and Eco-Tourism

The Mahi backwater islands, surrounded by lush greenery and hills, are already attracting tourists. Under the ‘City of Hundred Islands’ initiative, the area will see the development of water-based activities, nature tourism, viewpoints, and other attractions. This planned effort by the state government aims to position the region as a major eco-tourism destination, not only in Rajasthan but across India.

Forward-Looking Government Initiative

According to Suresh Singh Rawat, Minister of Water Resources, “The development of Mahi Dam will be balanced, eco-friendly, and revenue-generating. In the coming years, a model will emerge that fulfills the objectives of regional development, tourism, and water conservation. This initiative will give the Mahi region a new identity and serve as a milestone in the overall development of the Vagad area.”
