Udaipur: The Rajasthan Child Advisory Group (R-KAG), a collective platform of NGOs, volunteers, and retired officials working for child rights, has expressed serious concern over the closure of orphan child homes in the state.
Addressing a meeting held at the Zila Parishad Auditorium, R-KAG President and social worker Chandragupt Singh Chauhan stated that the organization’s foremost responsibility is to act promptly wherever there is any violation of child rights and to work in coordination with the government. He termed the recent closure of orphanages as alarming and said that the group will engage with the government to ensure their reopening at the earliest.
On this occasion, R-KAG General Secretary and former member of the Rajasthan State Child Commission, Dr. Shailendra Pandya, informed that under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, separate homes for boys and girls were established for orphaned children at every district headquarters. In Udaipur, which is also a divisional headquarters, around 18 such homes were earlier operational, housing more than 600 children. He raised concern over where these children have gone after the closure of these homes and emphasized the need to draw the government’s attention to this issue.
During the meeting, educationist and R-KAG member Dr. Rajshri Gandhi highlighted the growing issue of substance abuse among children and suggested action to curb the availability of drugs around educational institutions.
Dr. Geeta Patel, Director of Maitri Sansthan and a member of the organization, raised concerns related to children in tribal areas and emphasized the need for collective and sustained efforts.
Other participants, including Pradeep Rawani (Samvidha Sansthan), Girish Bharti (Pratibaddh Sansthan), Nitin Paliwal (Gayatri Seva Sansthan), Archana Singh (Rahda Foundation), Sakharam Meghwal (Navjeevan Sansthan), Kanishka Shrimali, Payal Kaneria, Ashita Jain, and Vivek Paliwal, also shared their views.
After the meeting, members of R-KAG submitted a memorandum to Udaipur District Collector Namit Mehta, demanding the immediate reopening of child homes and ensuring protection and care for orphaned children.
