KK Gupta: Abu Road to Become a Model Town in Cleanliness, Fulfilling the Chief Minister’s Vision

Jaipur/Abu Road: KK Gupta, appointed as the State Cleanliness Brand Ambassador by the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) under the Department of Local Self-Government, Rajasthan, addressed a cleanliness workshop at the Municipal Council, Abu Road.

While addressing the workshop, Gupta said that Abu Road, a prominent tourist destination on the Rajasthan-Gujarat border, will be developed as a role model for cleanliness, fulfilling the commitment of the state’s Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. “The Chief Minister has entrusted me with this responsibility as the cleanliness brand ambassador, and I am determined to execute it with utmost dedication,” he added.

Gupta highlighted that the Chief Minister personally follows up every week regarding cleanliness workshops and meetings. He emphasized that there would be zero tolerance for negligence, and strict action will be taken against officials or staff who fail to comply with cleanliness standards.

Significance of the Swachh Bharat Mission:
Gupta underlined that the Swachh Bharat Mission is not merely a government program, but a campaign directly impacting the lives of India’s 1.42 billion citizens. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, the ambitious program has produced far-reaching positive outcomes.

He cited the construction of 12 crore toilets across private homes as part of the mission. During the COVID-19 lockdown, these facilities proved invaluable, especially in rural areas, ensuring sanitation when leaving homes was restricted. Gupta noted that sanitation not only prevents disease but also fosters a clean and healthy environment. According to government data, prior to 2014, around 2.5 million people annually died due to diseases caused by unhygienic conditions.

Cleanliness Rankings:
Gupta explained that municipalities have been classified into four categories based on their sanitation efforts:

  • Category A: Municipalities showing excellent performance in cleanliness.

  • Category B: Municipalities with satisfactory performance.

  • Category C: Municipalities showing insufficient seriousness; warnings will be issued for improvement.

  • Category D: Municipalities requiring strict action.

Key Guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission:

  1. Door-to-Door Waste Collection: Separate wet and dry waste collection by 10 AM, with one vehicle covering 400 households per day.

  2. Ban on Plastic Bags: Ensure strict enforcement and regular monitoring.

  3. Community Toilets & Urinals: Cleaned three times a day; proper paint, water supply, and hygiene maintained.

  4. Nighttime Cleaning: Commercial areas to be cleaned regularly; one worker should not cover more than 400 meters. Workers must wear reflective jackets.

  5. Cleaning Vacant Plots: Notices in newspapers; if not cleaned within three days, municipal authorities will clean and impose fines up to ten times the normal charge, or seize the property if required.

  6. Parks & Gardens: Maintain cleanliness, functioning playgrounds, fountains, grass, trees, and timely repair work.

Additional Measures:

  • Ensure painted dividers, healthy trees, and street lighting on poles.

  • Maintain roads and drains, ensure all fountains function.

  • Provide dustbins for shopkeepers and maintain cleanliness at tourist spots.

  • Ban illegal meat shops; prevent sewage and dirty water from entering lakes and ponds.

  • Address road maintenance and complaints promptly; penalize littering in public spaces.

Through these initiatives, Gupta emphasized, Abu Road will set an example for the entire state, demonstrating how systematic cleanliness efforts can transform public spaces, protect health, and create a welcoming environment for residents and tourists alike.
