Udaipur Takes Pride in Its Youth
Udaipur | 23-year-old Gaurang Sharma from Mewar has set yet another inspiring example for the youth.
On March 13, 2026, at 09:12 AM (NST) / 08:58 AM (IST), Gaurang hoisted the Tricolor at Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters). This journey spanned approximately 137 kilometers, which he completed in 8 hours.
Gaurang recounts that during a personal trip—specifically a weekend getaway to Jaisalmer—he met Callum, a British traveler who had successfully completed the trek to Everest Base Camp. At that very moment, a question arose in his mind: "If he can do it, why can't I?" Drawing inspiration from that thought, he went on to achieve this remarkable feat.
Throughout this journey, Gaurang faced numerous difficulties; indeed, many friends told him that it couldn't be done. However, demonstrating immense passion and courage, Gaurang achieved this milestone and has etched his name into the pages of history.
What is Everest Base Camp?
Everest Base Camp (EBC) serves as the staging ground for mountaineers attempting to climb the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. It is situated in two primary locations: the South Base Camp in Nepal (5,364 meters) and the North Base Camp in Tibet (5,150 meters). It is a renowned trekking destination offering breathtaking, unimaginable views of the Himalayas.
Great Pride for Family and City
Gaurang's mother, Dr. Abha Sharma, expressed her immense pride in her son, stating that she is confident he will continue to bring honor to his family and society in the future. Gaurang's achievement marks a moment of joy—not only for Udaipur but for the entire region of Mewar. Gaurang has become a source of inspiration for every young person today, proving that with willpower, determination, and self-confidence, any goal can be achieved.
This was not merely a trek; it was a battle—against his own body, against the circumstances, and against himself.
Gaurang recounts that during this 16-day journey, he developed severe blisters on his feet; painful chafing made every step a struggle; dehydration and shifting weather conditions disrupted his physical equilibrium; and biting winds and shards of ice inflicted injuries upon his face. There were moments when turning back seemed like the only sensible option, yet deep within his mind lay an unwavering resolve: he would not give up.
Gaurang shared that a trek generally considered easy felt incredibly arduous to him. In May 2025, following a severe accident, he had suffered from a prolonged illness. His body was frail, and his stamina was all but depleted. Gaurang completed this entire journey without the aid of a guide.
In December 2025, Gaurang also successfully completed the trek to Chandrashila (3,680 meters).
Chandrashila (a summit ranging from 3,680 to 4,000 meters)—a breathtaking peak situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand—stands directly above Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. Famous as the "Moon Rock," it offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks (including Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath). It is easily accessible via a trek from Chopta (approximately 5 km), making it a popular trekking destination even for beginners.
This marks the second major achievement in Gaurang's life. For the future, Gaurang is currently preparing to undertake a mountaineering course.
