Jaipur, A major push towards combating vision loss caused by Glaucoma is gaining momentum in Jaipur, as Sightsavers India, in collaboration with AbbVie Therapeutics India Private Limited, organized a state-level consultation meeting.

The consultation, held at Hilton Jaipur, brought together ophthalmologists, policymakers, public health experts, and representatives from social organizations. The focus was to strengthen awareness, promote early detection, and reduce vision impairment caused by glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness.

This initiative is part of an ongoing nationwide campaign that has already seen multiple state-level consultations and a national-level meeting held last year in New Delhi. The 2026 campaign builds on that foundation, aiming to further enhance dialogue and action across regions.

Focus on Early Detection and Awareness

Experts at the meeting emphasized the importance of regular eye check-ups, early diagnosis, and understanding risk factors associated with glaucoma. To support this, on-site screening counters equipped with portable diagnostic tools were set up, allowing participants to undergo immediate eye examinations. Individuals identified with potential risks were referred for further clinical evaluation and treatment.

Key Voices and Insights

The session began with a welcome address by Jatin Tiwari, Director – Program Operations at Sightsavers India. This was followed by insights from Dr. Rahul Rathod, Director – Medical Affairs at AbbVie Therapeutics India Private Limited.

The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Nagendra Singh Shekhawat, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at SMS Hospital Jaipur.

CEO R.N. Mohanty of Sightsavers India stressed the need for stronger regional efforts and healthcare systems that ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. He highlighted that awareness alone is not enough—robust systems must support early identification and consistent care.

Dr. Rahul Rathod further noted that glaucoma management goes beyond detection and requires long-term monitoring and adherence to treatment, making patient education and accessibility crucial.

Expert Panel and Recommendations

The event also featured a keynote by Dr. Lakshman Singh Jhala, Medical Director at Alakh Nayan Mandir Eye Hospital, followed by a panel discussion with leading experts including Dr. Darshana Daga from ASG Eye Hospital Jaipur.

Key recommendations included:

Integrating glaucoma screening into primary healthcare services

Strengthening the capacity of ophthalmologists

Improving patient counselling for long-term treatment adherence

Impact on Ground

A total of 99 participants attended the consultation, with around 45 individuals screened on-site using portable diagnostic tools. Several at-risk individuals were identified early and referred for further medical evaluation.

A Step Towards Preventing Blindness

Through this continued partnership, Sightsavers India and AbbVie Therapeutics India Private Limited aim to ensure that more people receive timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and long-term eye care, ultimately helping preserve vision and improve quality of life.
